need help with speaker backer box for theatre

629 Views 3 Replies 2 Participants Last post by  LLDaLastDon
how do i mount install my speakers into the wall when using backer boxes? my understanding is the in-wall speaker clip onto the back side of the drywall.

Do i need to construct the backer boxes so that my drywall overlaps the front of the box?

Does anyone have any photos that might help me get this built correctly?

Ps: also doing in-ceiling speakers with backer box but i think the process is the same?

I'm in the process is building my theater. You can take a look at my build thread. I built backers for all my surrounds, Atmos, and lights. The surrounds stick out some but will be covered with columns. Most of it is built inside the walls. This allows me to be flexible with the speakers and upgrade/change them easy. For my ceiling speakers, I mounted them so the first layer of drywall fits flush with the bottom of the backers' opening. Then the second layer of drywall lays flat over the backer holes. I will cut the holes out to fit the speakers accordingly. I used a similar technique from the Ashton Cove build thread.

Another option is get speakers that are the same depth as your studs so you wouldn't need columns. I didn't think that is as flexible. But too each it's own.

took a quick peek looks awesome... so the 2nd layer of drywall will overlap more and then the speakers can clip onto that is that the plan ?
What kind of glue did you use? Just regular wood glue? Is glue better than screws? Did you use any green glue acoustic caulking?
PS: That's a nice projector, Damn!
The 2nd layer of drywall just lays flush with everything. Then I'll just cut the holes out of that for the speakers. So, 1st layer is lined up with the bottom opening of the backer boxes and the 2nd lays flush over the backer box opening and 1st layer.

I used 3/4'' MDF and titebond wood glue and a few Brad nails and clamps to hold them while the glue dries.
