Hello,

I'm about to pick up a Panasonic 42" HDTV Plasma and will be mounting it on the wall. I need to upgrade my receiver to at least 5.1 surround.

Wiring the cables behind the wall for the plasma is both expensive and limits future expansion. Thus I would like to install a single connection between my TV and receiver, and then use my receiver to select the source.

The plasma will not have speakers and the receiver will be used to power 6 smallish speakers. I live in a condo so massive amounts of power is not required but would be nice for future upgrades.

Can somebody recommend a specific receiver which can handle three component (HD) video inputs (HD Cable, Progressive Scan DVD, HD Xbox) as well as iPod and possibly some other audio sources.

THANK YOU,

Bill D

by the way not sure what my budget is for this, but not looking to spend $1k, maybe more like $500 or even less. Does that buy me a good receiver nowadays?

It's been a looonnng time since I picked up my last Sony.

if i need to spend big bux to do what I"m trying to do, i'll probably pick another 5.1 receiver and upgrade the cabling behind hte wall.

The Denon 2805 would give you ample power and (IIRC) three component imputs....plus. The fly in the ointment is going to be if you ever want to run the DVI output from your HD cable box to the display...can't be done with a low priced receiver (yet, that I know of). In my system, I found the DVI output gave better PQ than component.....not substantial, but noticeable. YMMV

Thanks.

I looked at the NAD and HK receivers and found only two component inputs - in my price range anyway - and thus those are out.

I found the Devon AVR-1705, 1905, 2105, and 2805 all to be acceptable.

The Onkyo TS-SR602 also has the correct number of video inputs.

Are there any other brands/models I'm missing?

Thanks for the tip about DVI. I need to talk to Comcast to figure out exactly what outputs there are. i was under the impression that they had component out. I know that they have DVI out, but the Panny 7UY plasma does not have HDMI input, you have to buy a blade, and I'm trying to save money.

Good god there are so many variables I think my head will explode.

regardless, still need a good new receiver!

Well, if your head exploads, then can I have your 42 inch plasma? ;)

Jokes aside, I second that on Denon 2805, as I am doing the same as what You want to do, and it works beautifully.

Good luck.

One more Question:

The Denon 2805 vs. 2105

What are the big differences between these two? I don't need the multi-room capability, backlit remote, and the loss of some power to the speakers is not a problem. are there other issues to worry about?

What about the 1905?

Bill,

Check the other threads, my recollection is that the 1905 & 2105 have issues and the 2805 is the bottom end of the non-issue Denons.

I would wait until you have the money to buy the Denon 3805 because it transcode everything out via component so you don't have video switching to worry about, better video (100 MHz bandwidth,if the bandwidth is less than 100 MHz you will get truncation and a softening of the picture) and much better audio, more wattage. I have the AVR-5803 and I just love it and I don't think I will have to buy another receiver for a long long time.

Denon claims the 1905 has 100mhz badnwidth on the component inputs/switching as well.
