I'm on my second 5065 with 302 firmware. I need advise fast as I must return it tomorrow, Sat. Sept. 27 to get within my 30 day return window at BB. I've got a couple of questions that I know this forum can answer.

1. The fan makes a noise that can be heard during quite passes in audio. I know it's the fan, because when you power down the set it continues, during cool down and, I assume, after the color wheel stops spinning. Is the fan noise a common noise on these sets?

2. My wife sees rainbows and I do not. Therefore, I assume some see it and some do not. Is that the case?

3. Do RPLCDs display rainbows as well or is it a phenomenon with DPLs only?

4. This is an edited question. When I hook up the DVI connection from the set-top cable box, I get the screen that states "Please hook the set-top to a HDTV set." I can see there's a picture behind the screen and get audio. How do you remove this screen?

Oh by the way, just got the hi-def hooked up via Time Warner, OMG is it beautiful! Discovery HD looks like looking out the window, simply amazing. And just hooked up a JVC XV-N50BK DVD player with progressive scan, is this a good player, in your opinion?

Thanks for the replies, my TV depends on them.

Since you are pressed for time I will forego the typical "do a search" answer you might sometimes get to these questions :):

0. It is "DLP", not "DPL" :)

1. If it just sounds like a fan running then it is normal. If is is a high pitched whine then not so normal. If a rough grating sound with sparks flying out the back, perhaps even less normal.

2. Some see rainbows easier than others. There is a number you can call on the back of the set and they will come and pick her up :D (sorry, couldn't resist such humor on a Friday afternoon)

3. RP-LCD sets use three LCD panels, one each for R-G-B. So no rainbows here but potential for slight misconvergence (some better OOTB than others). Note that RP-LCD will also give you poorer black levels and contrast ratio than DLP, but good enough for some.

4. This question confuses me. Behind what screen? Are you trying to watch copy-protected material?

Here's another question: Does your wife get headaches after watching the set for a while? Some people also have this problem.

sounds like the biggest problem you have is the rainbows your wife sees.

can she handle them or is that a deal breaker to her?

that would really be your answer as far as returning the TV goes (obviously you enjoy the TV).

To BTDT and videoking,

You're correct, it is DLP, bad typing fingers.

1. The sound is definitely fan sound. After watching a movie tonight it is not as bad as I thought.

2. I don't think they'll come for my wile, she's mine and I guess I'll have to keep her, she's better than the TV in any event!!

No, she has not had any head aches yet, have not watched enough of the set yet. So far, we have watched "Anger Management" and it looks great, even though she sees some rainbows. See wears contacts or glasses, do you think that has anytihng to do with it? She'll let me know in any event, and I'll comment back on this thread.

3. Yes, I do love this TV, it is really quite good!.

In any event, the set looks great in both, HD and DVD, I guess I'll keep it and continue to tweak. The only SM tweak i"ve done is setting the gamma to 0 from the factory setting of 5. Of course I've played with the regular menu and use a custom setting for TV, HDTV and DVD.

Thanks for all your help.

I could have sworn I have seen that 'please connect to a' thing somewhere here about Sammie DLPs... can't be a HDCP thing, but that's what it sounds like... and I can't find any threads that have it, if that's the real error message. Sorry!

BTDT got all the answers right, except for the wife suggestion of course.

Fan noise is normal, just decide if you can live with it

Rainbows are a some do/some don't thing, there's no fix if you do, just have her decide how much they bother her

No rainbows on LCD, no blacks either :D

Maybe a setup issue with the cable box? Run through its setup menu and make sure it knows what kind of TV it's sending to.

The STB need to know that it's sending to a 16*9 set and what resolution it would accept. I would use 720 if available or 1080i if there is no 720p.

Be sure that both you and your wife realize that rainbows are going to be there for the time you have the set. Some people learn to ignore them and others can't stand them.

The new Panasonic, Hitachi, and Sony LCD RP TV sets do not have color wheels and therefor do not have rainbow problems.

If I were you, I would at least ask for an extension because your wife is seeing rainbows. Then I would spend more time watching both TV and DVDs to be sure if it's going to bother her too much. It didn't sound like you have sent much time doing that so far.

If you can get the extension do a double feature and see if the rainbows get worse.

Good luck.

htwaits,

The set top box is set to 16:9 and 1080i, 720p is not available. After making sure these are set properly I still the get the "connect the set top box to a HDTV" error. However, as stated above the signal is coming through, only behind the error message. I guess I'll try to call Samsung to see what is going on. We watched Anger Management last night and my wife did see rainbows again. See wears glasses, don't know if that makes the rainbow effect any worse, but she said it didn't bother her too much.

The fan noise is a bit like a low pitch growl, I could learn to live with it, but for a $3500 TV, it would be nice to be whisper quiet. I'll call BB to see if I can get the extension, my guess is they won't do it. The BB I bought the set from can't keep them in stock for one day.

Other than the above, the PQ on DVD and HD is just stunning, SD is not bad either. But DVD and HD is better than any other TV, CTR, LCD or plasma that I have seen in stores.

It would be helpful if you'd identify your STB. There is a well-known and not-yet-fixed incompatibility between the Samsung DLPs and the Pioneer 3510HD STB and at least one Pace model that produces that error message when a DVI connection is attempted. You're the first person I know of, though, who's seen something "behind" the error message. Pioneer is aware of this not-so-minor glitch and has reportedly concluded that its STB "thinks" it's connected to a PC monitor instead of a television. The main thread devoted to this problem is: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showt...hreadid=289334

Manatus,

The STB is a Pioneer BD-V3500HD. From your post, it may be indeed be the STB, being close to the one you stated, Pioneer 3510HD. I'll go to the thread you linked and see if there is any other info. If it is a known problem with Pioneer you'd think they would fix it.

But, yes, there is a signal coming through, audio and video. You can hear it and see the info bar below the error message, Time Warner digital cable.

toogos,

A "low pitched growl" sounds louder than my fan, which is almost whisper quiet. When the room is quiet, like late at night, and nothing else is making noise, I can hear my fan from my watching/listening seat 8-9' away. Otherwise I never hear it. I certainly never hear it if there's any sound at all coming from the TV or the sound system. If yours is louder than that, I'd ask them to fix or replace.

I have not even noticed the fan being on except for the cool down after the power is off, and it's hardly noticeable. Also, I wear glasses and I have to try *really* hard to see any rainbows by shifting my eyes very rapidly. I never see them unless I am trying.

IN regards to the TimeWarner STB. I have the same TV i picked up in July and also ran into that problem and the screen that you are talking about where you can see the broadcast coming through but the Samsung shows that message overtop. I researched it into the problem that TimeWarner right now is only broadcasting the appropriate signal through components and the DVI connection will be unlocked at a future time if that is the route they are going to go. I wish I could remember where I found this so I could be more specific but it is not on Sammys end its the Time Warner signal or box. Make sure to pick up the M1000cv Monster component cables for the best HDTV picture on that Pioneer box. Discovery channel is my startup channel. There are many more usefull applications to use that DVI for like running a Home theater pc or the new dvd player from samsung that upconverts the signal to 720 or 1080 which comes close to HTPC dvd visual playback. I am also curious if your wife actually pointed out the rainbows one day or if you warned her of them and now she is saying she is seeing them. I have had bout 25 people view my tv for games, movies, etc and never heard that complaint or the fan noise myself. Just wondering if its one of those phenomenons people mention or try to look for then see it. I have never had that problem but did do BestBuys 4 year replacement plan, worse case scenario you can complain bout it 4 years down the road and get a nice 3900 dollar credit for whatever is new at the time. :D

robsdoghouse,

I've talked to TWC and they agreed that the DVI is inactive at this time, Dayton, OH.

Yes, I did mention the rainbows to my wife. All I said was "Do you see any rainbows?" And she immediately answered "yes." She says they don't bother her, she just ignores them, wow, I am sure I couldn't.

About the "growl" noise. I talked to Samsung service yesterday and they said to take the set back to BB and exchange it. Too new, 2 weeks old, to send a service person. And she said, "You don't want to have it worked on all the time." Now what do you suppose that means? Does Samsung know they have a definite problem with this series, HLN 5065? From what I understand, BB can not keep these sets in stock and I'm told by BB, Samsung is racing to get these out to stores. Could it be that quality control is taking a back seat to sales?!

Regarding rainbows, I see them on my 61" DLP, and it's going back this week. It doesn't bother me on most outdoor programs and sports, but movies with darker scenes are almost unwatchable. My wife doesn't see them at all.

Before you condemn LCD's for there supposed lack of black levels, go compare the new Hitachi LCD's to the DLP's. CC tends to set them up right next to each other for easy comparisons. Unlike the SONY LCD's, the Hitachi uses a very dark anti-glare screen, and IMHO the blacks are as good as the DLP's.

It boils down to your personal preference, though. To me, the annoyance of rainbows far outweighs a slight degradation in black levels.

Got my third set from BB yesterday. I believe all Samsung DLPs make a fan/color wheel motor noise, some louder than others. This set, the sound is there but, is significantly less than the previous set I just returned.

The new set was released July '03, firmware 302, but the sticker on the back said, manufactured September '03. Also, the bulb had two hours on it and the power cord had not been professionally wrapped. In other words, the power cord looked like it had been stretched out and hastily put back in the plastic zip tie. The set came straight out of the box, did so myself, strange?!

The set works great OTB, set the gamma to 1, BTW gamma OTB was 4 not 5 like the previous OTB set, double strange?! Any ideas?
