Need slim/thin/skinny tower speakers..any suggestions?

12072 Views 23 Replies 14 Participants Last post by  theanimala
I need to purchase 2 tower speakers. They cannot be wider than 8" and cannot be deeper than about 8"

Height is not an issue.

I've seen the Mirage towers and they would work, but there's no where close by to demo. So word of mouth would be helpful. I do own the Nanosats so I have an idea of the Mirage sound, but the sats do not cut it for music very well and that has me worried about the towers too.

Any other suggestions? brands?

8 inches in depth? That's a really tight restriction for a tower speaker. You want to put them inside a cabinet or something?

Maybe you would be better served with slimline bookshelf speakers, like the JBL L810 or L820, which are only 5-6 inches deep.
Unfortunately the TV is in a corner and there's only so much space on either side. I've listened to the slimline Definitive Technology speakers and they really did not do it for me.

I'll try to find the JBL's
Not sure about your tastes or budget, but the Paradigm Millena 200's would fit the description.

My den system has a pair of Athena WS-100 slim towers and i must say they produce quite an airy soundstage. They also have a nice, clean, modern look and are pretty inexpensive. They do need a sub though.

I would imagine given your space desciption that the sepeation between the two would be limited to 4ft or less which is far from ideal for imaging. Given that fact, i'd refrain from any high end purchase as the additional expense will be useless in that placement. The narow baffle goes a long way to help, it just won't help with limited seperation. Here's a link to the Athena's

Space between the 2 speakers will be right around 4 feet.

My budget is 1400.00

Is there a sub/sat system that I just might have missed that will give you big speaker sound and not kill the midrange?

Thank you!
Take a look @ B&W XT4. They might just fit your needs.
Digging up an old thread and trying to find out if there are any new recommendations for narrow speakers. Some of these are no longer around, and I would love to get something that sounds good, looks good, at a good price. Thanks!
Is your budget the same $1400 as the OP?

The Mirage OS3FS is still around.

I would have a tough time justifying the price to myself when you can get the OMD15 for the same price. But I guess a man has to know his space limitations.

These would qualify if you need narrow speakers and are a bargain.

They're really not Energy speakers though, just rebadged Athena WS-60s.

Paradign Milennia are still around.

How about some Totem Arros? The are tiny and sound pretty good and they are damn fine looking.

They are also easily found second hand.

EDIT: Silverline Preludes would work as well.

I own the VM30's. The speakers are actually 7 1/2" deep by 5" wide. However, the base that they sit on is 10 1/2 ' wide by 12 1/2" deep. This may work for the OP, but he should check out the picture on the Polk website to make certain.

How are those gonna work at 9" wide and 15.75" deep? The request was no more than 8" deep.

It will give him an excuse, to remodle his place.

Are you still set up, where a tower will block a window? You can

look at the Monitor Audio Radius 225

This one may or may not, be difficult for you - check it out > Cambridge SL70

"Sorry to hijack this thread, but I have a similar question but in the other direction. I currently have a circa 1992 Altec Lansing Sub/Sat System 3 combo (pictured below). Amazingly they still sound pretty decent all things considered. In addition to the passive sub of the AL's, I also have a Sunfire True Subwoofer behind my TV as well.

I want to get away from the satellite system and go with something SLIGHTLY larger. Due to WAF big tower speakers are not going to work as they will block the window to the right. I am thinking of getting a narrow bookshelf speaker like the Definitive Technology Mythos 6 or Mythos 2 which amazingly can fit in the 5 1/2 inches I have on either side of my TV. Other option is a very narrow tower speaker such as the DefTech Mythos 5.

Anyone have any recommendation on going bookshelf or very narrow tower?"
