Need some advice on new HDTV Purchase

535 Views 6 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  andy sullivan
Hi All,

I was pointed to this forum by a friend.

My wife and I are looking to get into a 45"-65" HDTV this fall but I just do not know where to start. I understand the differences between the technologies in Plasma, LCD, DLP etc. but am not sure what to choose.

We mostly watch sports ( well me anyways) and she enjoys her daily dose of the FOX news channel with some reality TV mixed in. There might also be a meadia center PC hooked up as well as some video gaming.

So, where do I start?

My budget is probably around or under $3500.

Thanks for any input.

First, I'd say you are a bit broad in your post. If you know the different technologies, than you should have an idea of which one works best for you. If you have a technology picked out and then want suggestions on what size and type fits into your budget and has good PQ, people might help you then. Some of the avs posters aren't the most "come let me solve all your problem" type people. There are some very knowledgeable people. They just aren't customer service at best buy (who are eager to help you, but usually don't know what they are talking about). Figure out your viewing distance and which technology is going to perform best for your space and considerations. Hopefully some people will help you after that.

For that amount of money you can buy a bigger screen such as a back projection display. Or you can buy a smaller screen (slightly better overall quality) for around $3500 such as upcoming 52 inch Sharp lcd or the new Sony lcd at Costco for slightly less money. A very good quality Panasonic 50 inch plasma can be had for around $2900. The choice is up to you. You will get lots of opinions here but only take them for what they are..personal opinions..nothing more, nothing less. Just a remark in closing..go to Costco and, if you see a tv you like, remember the price will be fair and the warranty will have no time limit. To me that is worth something and a good peace of mind. As of now, they do have the newest 46 inch 1080p Sony set. It is right at your budget and is a very good lcd set. Best thing is go out and view many sets in different locations..make notes..With any of above sets, you can not make a big mistake for they are all very good.

OOps, sorry. Did not realize I was being too broad.

MY viewing distance is roughly 10' or so. The room I am in has a decent amount of sunlight during the day.

It is my understanding that plasmas need more darkness than LCDs and also there might be a chance of burn in if I am playing video games ( though that issue is less prominent than the past).

I would say I am open for either suggestion at this point on a Plasma or LCD.
I would compare the two or three top rated 46" LCD's and 50' Plasmas. Most reviews will tell you that the Plasmas have a better overall PQ but light control is a big deal. I also have quite a bit of light in my viewing room but I easily control it with blinds and drapes.
