Here is my set-up:

Room: 13ftx22ftx7'10 no windows, six recessed lights on dimmer

Walls: Dark Coffee

Ceiling: Medium Gray

Projector: Panasonic AE3000u

I plan on using a ceiling mount that would be approximately 12ft away from the screen. I'm looking for recommendations for a 16:9 92in (diagonal) fixed projector screen. Specifically, should I be looking for a high contrast gray or will standard white be more acceptable with the dark walls? Any advice would be very much appreciated.

I agree. With your dark surfaces, I'd recommend a white screen.

I have to ask, though. Why such a small screen? Many here have said they wish they had purchased a larger screen. I think you would have plenty of room for at least 100"--unless there's an obstruction of some kind on the wall.

No reason, I was just being conservative. If I go to a larger screen, how will this effect my picture quality? I plan on living in this room during football season and I want the best picture possible. Other than the surround/center channel speakers, the wall is clean.

With your projector, PQ shouldn't be an issue. You can easily do 110", possibly even 120"+. You wouldn't want to go wall-to-wall because your front speakers will probably obscure sides of the screen. My room is just shy of 12' wide and 7'2" high and I went with a 110" because of the front speakers. Mind you, the borders of my screen are over 6" wide, too. Also 110" is probably the maximum size I could have without the bottom being too close to the floor. The second row of seats can easily see the bottom of the screen over the heads of the front row (riser height is about 13").

If you are going 16:9, I would stick to about 1.5-1.75x width away. So on a 92" diag. that would be 10'-11.67' away. If your room is all for theater, I agree with the others that you would probably benefit to go larger (unless you have a close seating placement, though doesn't make sense with such a large room). In regards to PQ, the AE3000 is a great projector and will make HD look incredible, and SD look darn good, or about as good as it can.

How far were you planning to sit?

A larger screen will let you see detail more clearly and will give a more immersive "you are there" experience. A larger screen will also have a dimmer picture, as image brightness is inversely proportional to the size of the screen's viewing area, which (for a fixed aspect ratio) is proportional to the square of the screen diagonal. I mentioned 100", because that would still leave you room for your L/C/R speakers without having to jam them into the corners or onto the floor. Your AE3000 has plenty of light output for a 100" screen.

I don't think there's any disease in purchasing this stuff. Everything has to follow a natural progression over time. As time goes by, things will inevitably need replaced.

As an example, I'm a frugal person. I had my DLP tv for almost 6 full months! Then I did have to replace it with a projector but that was just due to age as that model had been superceeded twice by the manufacturer.

I still have that same projector, though I am waiting on the 4th screen, and just finished the 3rd room paint job and second room configuration. It's also getting old now, I've probably had that pj almost 6 weeks anyhow!

I'm thrilled with my setup and can't imagine changing it. I bet I'll be even more thrilled this weekend when the new screen gets here.

In all seriousness, call Jason and buy a screen. I have as much in my DIY screen as I have in the one I ordered from him today, and I seriously doubt you'll beat his pricing. Then too, it is their forum.

It is true...often the DIY attempts, especially if one isn't familiar, can cost so much in materials and time that ultimately just buying new off the bat would have been cheaper (and usually better).

Thanks for the kind words as well!

Thanks for the knowledge guys. I'm looking at the Da-Lite Cinema Contour screen with the Cinema Vision material. Is this a good choice and where can I get the best price?

Thanks again for your help.

You're welcome! That's the same frame I use. The Cinema Vision is an excellent choice with your ceiling mounted PJ. AV Science (the forums' owners) carry Da-Lite. Their prices are very fair IMO. Be sure to get a quote from Jason before you buy.

I'm also looking to use the Panasonic AE3000U projector and have a dedicated, light controlled room measuring 12.5' x 23'. I've planned to have a throw distance of 17' with the seating roughly 12' from the screen. I'm looking at a 120" SmX ProLine 2.35:1 fixed screen which is now shipping with a set of 1.85:1 Masking ProPannels included in the $2850 cost. I'm all about value (value = quality/cost). What do you guys think of my selection? Is there a better (higher value) solution available? My main viewing material is BluRay/HD-DVD movies.
