Hey--

So here's a picture of my living room:

Honestly, I don't really want to mount the tv to the fireplace, but in this case there's just no other choice with the way the room is laid out. So if I were to try and put the tv up there, what are my options? The mantle is pretty solid but only 10.5 inches deep. I think a TV could sit up there, but I'd probably want some sort of backup to keep it from tipping?

The faux stone is like 3 inches thick. I thought about trying to mount it to that, but that seems pretty risky unless I could find a stud behind it.

Any suggestions? Thanks!

If I don't mount it to the fireplace, I can a) put it just to the left of the fireplace (which would look stupid, since the fireplace extends up about 25 feet, making the tv look ridiculous since it would also be in the corner) or turn the furniture around and place the back of the furniture to the fireplace (which is a definite no-no according to WAF). I'm not sure why people would laugh, did you have a bad experience in your past with someone being a jerk to you after you did it? There are far better things to make fun of me than that, like driving a minivan so I can haul my kids, playing xbox and video games, fixing pinball machines, not being a fancy dresser, etc. Evidently the TV/fireplace thing must be taboo in some places of the country, in Kansas nobody cares, lol.

I had a friend with the same problem, he did finally mount over the mantel...he used 6" lag bolts with the wall mount he got from Monoprice. If I can I will see if he can email me some pice...which I will share with you.

You would have to know how that mantel is mounted in order to trust it. If you attach a mount, it would have to go all the way through that faux stone and lag into something solid.

I am also one of those guys that would never mount over a fire place.

I put like 50 pounds in weights on the mantle, it didn't even budge. It's a solid piece of wood, probably weighs like 100 to 150 pounds by itself. So it sounds like the best solution is try and find some studs behind the stone. Like I mentioned at the top, I really don't want to put it up there, but a) WAF dictates that the furniture faces that way, b) it would look pretty dumb right next to the fireplace as it would have to be on a stand and pushed out in order to see it, and c) anyone with little kids knows that TV's take a beating when you have little kids. We currently have a Mitsu RPTV 200 lb tank in the room that's been taking a beating for the past 3 years from one of my sons. If it was a flat screen on a tv stand it would been destroyed about 3 or 4 times by now--being out of reach is almost a necessity until they get to an age where they know better. It's backed up against a staircase right now--so it works ok for that type of TV that's durable, that same setup would not work for a plasma/lcd due to the kids.
