Need suggestions for 46 in. HD ready TV

608 Views 9 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  tjk
I need to replace my bedroom TV. I watch most of my tivo'ed shows on this TV. I have 1000-1500 to spend. I was thinking about 46 inches give or take. I am at least 18 feet away. I don't care what technology, just the best picture for the least money. I'd like it to be HD ready cause I will eventually put an HD box up there. Any suggestions

Personally I think you'll want a bigger TV at that distance.
It's for a bedroom, replacing a 32 incher. I think anything under 50 will be fine.

Panasonic 53x54. Well within your price range, and would be GREAT at 18 feet.
Toshiba 46H84. I've had mine for about two weeks now and I really like the set. I set 9 ft from the screen and it looks very good.

Those are good options, How do people think these pictures compare to the slightly more expensive dlp sets like the 46hm84

can't give you any comparisons with the other tvs, but i have the 46hm84 and like it. my wife even made the comment that it is a great tv, and she normally couldn't care less about AV stuff. i guess she knows quality when she sees it, because she made similar comments when i got our tivo and harmony 680 remote. i suspect all of the above mentioned hdtv's will do well though.

That's really apples to oranges - the DLP is at least twice as much. If this is for a bedroom, I would take into consideration how light hits the set. the CRT will have a highly reflective screen, but no more so than the 32" you are replacing, so if it didn't bother you then, it won't bother you now.

While the 46H84 is considered a tabletop CRT, it is still going to be twice as deep and at least twice as heavy as the DLP. If decorative factors are a consideration (and they certainly may be in a bedroom), the DLP will be much better. But in your price range, you'll have to hunt for last year's models with an HD2 chip. Without an HD tuner, however, your not going to get a great picture with a DLP - I personally wouldn't buy a DLP unless I was planning on getting and HD tuner. Otherwise it's like getting a Viking convection oven (for you chefs out there) and using it to cook macaroni and cheese.

Another issue you will want to consider with the 46H84, however, is that without an HD tuner you will either have to watch everything with black bars on the side and make your set susceptible to burn-in, or will have to stretch everything. Won't be too bad, but may make you want to get that HD tuner a little quicker.
