need to replace color wheel on my Samsung HLN-5065W

Hi All - new to the forums here, hoping I can get some advice.

I bought a Samsung HLN-5065W 50" DLP from BestBuy about 2 years ago as a replacement for a Sony Wega CRT that died on me (I had a warranty on the Sony, and they couldn't fix it after 2 months, so they gave me credit towards the purchase of the Sammy). Up until about a month ago, I was perfectly happy - the picture quality was great, and I have been the envy of all my friends whenever they come over to the house. :)

However, about a month ago I started hearing the dreaded noise from the TV - at first I (very mistakenly) thought it might have been something wrong with the bulb, or even the bulb fan, but I put a pencil in there to stop the fan from spinning, and it only confirmed my darkest fears - it's the color wheel making the noise.

Now I don't have any fancy equipment to measure decibel levels or anything like that, but it is *loud*. If the volume on the TV is under 20, the sound is practically drowning out from the color wheel spinning noise.

I had a few months left on the warranty for the Samsung from my replacement Sony, but that warranty has since expired and I forgot to renew it. I have heard of some people replacing their color wheels and having success with it, and some people even having Samsung do it. I'm hoping I can get this fixed for $250 or less - I *really* can't afford a new TV right now, but the noise is just killing me.

Please - what do others recommend? Who else has had this problem, and what did you do?

Rayden7 - did you ever end up fixing your set? I have a HLN507W and the noise is pretty loud for me as well. I'm curious how cheap the fix is...
Unfortunately, no - I never got it fixed. And the problems with my set went from bad (with the excessive color wheel noise) to worse - in the past two months a dead pixel popped up - now there's a permanent white single pixel dot towards the middle of the screen. I know this means that a single micro-mirror isn't turning properly to reflect the right colors, so now my color wheel is junk and the DMD is effectively crap as well.

I have learned to "live with it" for now - I will not buy a Samsung television again.

Or remember to renew your warranty ;)

I learned the hard way myself. I did not get and EW on my DLP and 2 years into ownership I have a TV that costed me $3.3K "New", That now needs repairs that would cost almost as mush as a new better TV DLP/LCD.

I learned to "live with it" for now also................but I learned my lesson.

Edit to add. My problem is also a Color wheel that's really really loud and a month later started flashing a bright white light after the tv been on for an hour or so. The repair cost is close to $2,500. No way I'm paying that, I'm done with DLP's also.

I have a 3-year old HLN 50" in the house now, and it looks great, just has a noisy color wheel or fan. I don't notice it when the volume is up over 10+. No other problems really...fwiw.
