Need wiring help for fan cooling

253 Views 2 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  DaddyB
I am building an in wall entertainment center that backs into a closet. I need to cool the components and bought four pc fans at Radio Shack and an AC to DC wall wart. The fans have four wires; 1 red, 2 black and a yellow. Anyone know which two wires I need to get the fans moving and what the extra wires are for?

Thanks

I would guess it's just like a computer power supply wiring.

Red is +5 volts, Blacks are grounds and Yellow is +12 volts. If your power supply is 12 volts, connect the power supply to a ground and the yellow wire. If your power supply is 7 volts, connect to the red and the yellow wires. If your power supply is 5 volts, connect to the ground and the red wires.

Be sure your power supply amperage rating is higher than the total amperage of the fans. For example, if each fan (4) is rated at 1 amp (for simplicity of the example), then your power supply should be rated for more than 4 amps.
No the yellow is an RPM monitor, red is 12V and black is common/return/whatever you want to call it. Just ignore the yellow one unless you are going to hook up a fanbus to control the speed of the fan and want to monitor the rpm of the fan.

EDIT: Wait a minute, maybe these are for large molex connectors (four pin) and not the little fan connectors (3 pin) found on the motherboard. If it is a small connector (1/2" wide or so) then what I said is right, if it is a larger molex connector (about 1" wide) then what the previous poster said is correct. The fact that there are four wires would seem to indicate that the previous poster is correct though.

Sorry for any confusion and post back if you need more clarification, I'll find pictures of the connectors or something if required.
