As far as audio goes, it seems Netflix will be bringing 5.1 surround to its streaming service sometime this year. It was also reported that they'd be adding 1080p streams as well, though it looks like they've back off that announcement now. Perhaps sometime next year?

I don't know anything about Canadian law, but my understanding is that the movies have to be specifically licensed for a given country. There's also the whole "Everything must be in both French and English" thing, which always throws a wrench in things. Are folks in Canada normally able to rent and buy US-produced movies on the first day of DVD release, or is there an alternate Canadian version and release date?

I'm not sure about Bluray, but for DVD you had regions and Quebec falls into region 1, the same as the rest of Canada and the US - which is why almost all US DVDs have a French soundtrack.

Canada has their own distributors for American films so they have different home video releases than what we have in the US even though we are in the same media region as far as the coding goes. Most of the time, they get better releases or more catalog titles released sooner than what we get here in the US. Brotherhood Of The Wolf is a notorious DVD example of that. Canada got a great three-disc package with the Director's Cut while we had to wait several years to get a decent DVD release with the Director's Cut.

Was the original question about the physical DVDs/Blu-Rays, or about streaming, though?


For the physical discs, Netflix would need distribution centers in Canada, would need to work out a deal with the Canadian post office, etc. Does the language on the disc sleeve being in English violate the Canadian dual-language requirement? For streaming, if Netflix only has streaming audio in English, does it too violate the Canadian dual-language requirement?
