Hello..Have I missed something...what about the Netgear 9150?

No discussion or mention of...??

Has similar characteristics..to Popcorn Hour ...ie can play most formats

has included a 500Gb HD ..which is swapable

has multi platform connection ability..ie PC, Mac and NAS

plus has Wireless Network with N protocol onboard(ie fast wireless)

Is this unit not available..or something...looks good one to me??

It is a relatively new device with little detailed information available (processor?).

Two things I have retained so far: price and a real deal breaker to me: it does not seem to recognize subdirectories

Edit: Just found there are a couple of threads in here regarding this device, also it seems to Sigma8635 based (although it is not mentioned in the specs).

I'm not sure why it isn't discussed much here. It could be that Netgear has a very active forum discussing the device and users don't hang out here. I bought one a few weeks ago, and it is a very solid device. The software is actively updated every 2-3 weeks, and most of the bugs have been taken care of. It plays almost everything you can throw at it and using the latest beta and PlayOn it supports Netflix, youtube, and Hulu. The only downside that I can see is that it doesn't support general uPnP server software. So if you should need external transcoding via TVersity you are out of luck. I stream from my NAS or from the web at the push of a button and like it a lot.

The biggest deal breaker is probably price. My view is that it is about $75 over priced given the competition. On the upside the forum support is excellent, and it is almost to the stage of considering it an appliance rather than something you have to tweak all the time.

I wasnt sure about what its processor was...so I assume that means it is

not the latest model..

...and as you say it is on the high side in price terms for this type of player

...although if it is fairly stable and has only a few bugs ...then that can count for a lot...no constant fiddling or firmware updates

plus it seems to be well made ...with the removable hard drive ...and onboard

Wireless N(may help with wireless streaming speeds) plus 1080p upconversion

But it does seem to come down to how good the interface is(speed/usablility ..see PS3 for a good interface)

...as they all seem to be based on Sigma Design 86xxx chips

I have my two HTPCs already...but I am keeping across this group of products for family and friends...

watching as they mature into full blown multimedia centres

capable of covering everything upto 1080p resolutions.

Yes, you're right, it is still based on the previous generation of Sigma processors which are by no means bad performers but as always the new generation seems to be more powerful still.

I personally quite like the design (standard av sizing thus stackable) as this would blend beautifully with the rest of my av equipment without taking up too much (precious) space.

There is however a whole new generation of players out there and I guess it makes sense to hold on for another while (although I have to admit it is not easy to do so
).

What is a little confusing is that per the Netgear website is says that the EVA9150 supports mkvs (but only with AC3). So does this mean if you have audio tracks like TrueHD or DTS the mkv will not play correctly?

@ Devoz - funny, I just saw your post, I had just finished writing up on my blog about some of the media players I have my eye on (I use HTPCs but like having a media player like a PCH as a secondary player, my PCH just broke...). Here is my post - http://dbone1026.blogspot.com/2009/0...a-players.html

The build seems to be excellent, with an on/off switch in the bacK to boot. I wouldn't count on N for streaming HD. Check out smallnetbuilders.com for some of his tests. Go wired if you need HD. Compared to previous interfaces on these boxes the interface is excellent. Compared to some of the other interfaces out there, I have read a number of comments that it is somewhat limited in terms of eye candy. The interface is very fast though. The box comes on by the time my plasma shows a picture.

There will always be a newer and better box coming down the pike. I've had a little buyers remorse reading about some of the newer boxes, but that said, this does a much better than adequate job, and Netgear has done a good job fixing bugs before it hit the market.
