Netgear and Belkin Wireless

243 Views 4 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  j.m.
I have a NetGear wireless G router and a new Belkin Wireless G router, can they be bridge so I can use the Belkin with my Replaytv?

Thanks in advance.

Not likely. Unlike the Belkin, the Netgear doesn't support WDS bridging. However, *if* the Netgear has AP client mode, you may be able to use the Belkin as your router and connect the Netgear to it as a wireless client. This is iffy at best.
I don't think you'll have much luck ... what you'll probably need to do is get an ethernet to wireless bridge.

Many implementations of AP client mode end up with a proprietary mode

where the AP needs to keep track of the MAC addresses sitting behind

the "AP client" and requires specific support in the AP to work properly.

On the other hand, with MAC masquerading bridges (which BTW I'm

not advocating, just comparing against) the bridge/client keeps track

of the MAC addresses itself, so there is no support needed on the AP

side, and it will theoretically work with any AP.

I think there may be some confusion in our terminology at work here. The Sveasoft firmware provides a mode called "Client mode" that permits a WRT54G/GS to associate with any wireless AP/router (theoretically). In early versions of the firmware, a client mode WRT54G/GS supported only one connected device at any given time. I believe that this was changed to allow multiple devices in later firmware versions, though I am not 100% sure. It was planned anyway. As best I could tell when I used this "client mode" (briefly), it was equivalent to a MAC masquerading bridge.

*If* the Netgear has a similar mode (whatever its name), then it may work. However, it is probably not likely. The best bet is to buy another Belkin, preferably a pre-14xx revision, or a Buffalo.
