Netgear MP101 $79 after rebate

FYI Best Buy has the Netgear MP101 for $79 after rebates.

I really want a Roku Soundbridge M1000 (without wireless) but it's hard to justify at 2.5 times the price.

I almost picked up the Netgear on Sunday, but I walked away from it. There's still time before the sale is over.

Can anyone who has tried both please comment on them? The Roku looks much better and integrates with iTunes (which is what I use). The Netgear can use slimserver which sort of integrates with itunes, but has to transcode the AAC files to MP3 using LAME.

I have set up slimserver on my home pc to test it out, and it works pretty well.

Just looking for opinions.

I was not aware the slimserver was compatible with the MP 101. From what I have seen the MP101 must use the media server that comes with it.

It really depends what you plan on using your media player for. If it is a CD player replacement, you might want to consider a different option. There are no digital outputs on the MP101. I have also found the sound quality to be better with a SqueezeBox. I haven't tried the Soundbridge.

If you are just using it to supplement your current music and just play around with, then considering the price, the MP101 would probably be a decent choice.
Just an FYI...

If you purchase it online, you also get a $20 "digital coupon" for use on a future purchase at best buy (per the terms, it won't be emailed to you until the end of November, so don't plan on using it right away).

This makes it so hard to walk away from this deal. $59 after rebates/coupon...

The Slimserver/PocketPC works really well if I don't care about remote control access. So...$59 for remote access and the ID3 tag display...that's basically what I'd get.....
You keep taking about the MP101 with the Slimserver. Unless there is some hack out there that I haven't seen, there is no way to integrate the two together. You have to use the server software that comes with the MP101 which is inferior to Slimserver. You get what you pay for...
JGamer,

Oops, sorry, I googled Slimserver +mp101 and thought I found instructions on it.

but, as far as getting what you pay for...Slimserver is free. :)

Slimserver is free and open source, that is what is so great about it. However, the devices that use it (the SqueezeBox and Soundbridge) cost a lot more then the basic MP101.
If price is your only concern, by all means, get the Netgear box. It doesn't play AAC, however. And while it does connect to UPnP/AV servers, it only shows the folder hierarchy that the server exports.

The SoundBridge, on the other hand, plays AAC natively and when connecting to a server that support searching (at this point WMC or iTunes -- although iTunes uses DAAP, not UPnP), you get a feature-rich UI with much better browsing in addition to searching which the MP101 doesn't do.

Finally, while the MP101's display is arguably better than other lcd-based competitors, they all stack up very poorly against the brightness and legibility of the SoundBridge's VFD display. Oh yeah, we do DRM'd WMA files, as well.
The MP101 does support searching and has since they upgraded the Firmware a while ago. It also can be used with Twonkyvision if the server software supplied doesn't do it for you. The server software has never crashed running on my Win2KServer OS, but that is probably more luck than anything else.

Overall, I like the MP101 as it does what it is supposed to do: play my 320vbr MP3s without any trouble and my wife loves it.
I'm sorry if I wasn't clear about the searching capabilities of the MP101. It does support "Searching", meaning it will allow you to enter characters when you are already viewing a list and once the search completes, it will move the cursor to the first item in the already-loaded list that begins with the search term. While this may have its uses, it can hardly compare to being able to search the server for artists, albums, songs or composers that contain the search term.

Patrick,

Thanks for the information. Believe me, the Soundbridge is the device I want, but as with everything, price is a factor.

I think I will wait a bit. Hopefully the Roku devices will come down in price.

Toeside, Glad I could help.

You might consider going to your local BestBuy and picking up a SoundBridge and give it a shot for a while and then, if you don't like it, return it. Or you can order it directly from us and return it if you don't like it.
