Network music options

928 Views 6 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  SimpleSetup
I want to get rid of all my CDs. I am considering the following options:

1. Onkyo TX-NR905 or Denon 4308 + NAS con. to router

2. Non-network Receiver + Slimdevices transporter + NAS con. to router

3. Non-network Receiver + Olive Opus 5 (400g hard-drive)

4. Thinking about the new Arcam FMJ but cost twice higher than previous alternatives where I live now (would buy if sound quality improvement was worth it)

Could anyone advise on best option with sound quality primary requirement and ease of use secondary concern?

I've got all my gadgets connected to my network (2 computers, psp, smartphone, office laptop, internet radio player, a webcam for the newborn, the TV in the kitchen) so I believe I may handle installation and technical issues.

My loving one has said that she doesn't want an invasion of the living room by gadgets, so option 1 strongly preferred (note: get a payrise to buy a new flat with a sound-proof room of my own...)

There are a ton of options for you and it sounds like you can handle the setup, so you are in a good position. Have you thought about using one of your computers as the music server? It would provide almost limitless options for sound quality and disk space among others.
one of my computer stays in the bedroom and my loving one cannot sleep when it's on (noise). The other one is the small VAIO and lacks the needed storage capcity. Additionally, I don't want to depend on a computer as storage, hence NAS.

What other options?
I have a cheap version of what you're trying to do. I got a MacMini hooked up to my receiver via optical cable. All my music are on a external firewire drive. Not the optimal solution but working great for me. The only time I use the CD is when I rip them to the hard drive.
Quality is a must for me. Don't think I may get much of the MacMini's optical connection. I have a qosmio and quality (through the optical connection) is clearly inferior to my Arcam CD player.
A Mac Mini will give you bit perfect output from the optical port up to 24 bit / 192 KHz. Into the right DAC this solution can be better than many $10,000 CD/transport solutions including your Arcam.

I believe that. The DAC on the Arcam CD player is probably better than the receiver. To get to the same level of satisfaction, you will need an external DAC or get a receiver that has better DAC.
