Ofer,

Not sure if you know; Rainbow Displays Spectrum Model 3750 37" comes closest is it the market , rumor has it will possibly double in size w/ this year's announcements (moving from 3 fused 21.4" panels to 30"+) :

possible competition or rebrands:

Not sure why but the resolution is a bit low for these (852 x 480), albeit it can interpolate to 1280x960.

They have some interesting properties:500:1 contrast, 170 degrees VA and an average response time of 16 ms.

Do any models other than the 433 & 503 have the video wall capability built-in? I was stunned reading through the 433/503 technical manual to see the 2x2 video wall mode. Very cool, not that I expect to use this...

Suggested Retail Price $24,975

Just think, a screen almost (but not) as big as my projection screen for only 16.7 times the price. Sorry guys, but I will stick with projectors for a long time.

I kind of doubt the NEC is as seamless as what Rainbow is producing. Maybe, but it seems unlikely.

The problem with all these technologies is that so far no one has delivered much of anything interesting (maybe NEC has, but it doesn't seem that way). With jumbo LCDs coming from the LCD giants, Rainbow appears to be headed for rapid irrelevancy.

For videowalls, the small seam is not too important, for what it's worth. So that's where NEC is currently headed. Of course with a small seam, you could also achieve this size with a mess of LCDs.

I still think the future mega-wall holy grail is "tiles" of OLEDs that have phosphors going to the edge and can be joined via a connector mounted to the rear. You could go to thousands of feet and billions of pixels. With OLED, it should be possible to build the tiles with no bezel because there is no need for a backlight and it's an emissive technology.

Rogo,

You are correct, but plasmas are also emissive. Their main problem is the glass's edge and the need to hold it in place. I think the same will apply to OLEDs, but you are right - they are potentially more adequate for this application.

The downside with OLEDs for videowalls is that they will need a VERY strong scaler to scale up so many pixels.

Ofer: When the billion pixel videowall is out, hopefully Moore's Law will still be valid at that time.

I'm sure our video processing friends will figure out whose chips they need to handle all that math. :)

Also, for a 20-foot image, I'm sure that in many cases just making each pixel a 3 x 3 or larger grid of smaller pixels will be just fine. And then, when you want to watch 50 shows simultaneously, you can switch each tile back to full resolution.
