new CRT tubes, Future price drop ?

2113 Views 11 Replies 9 Participants Last post by  noki123
Will new CRT tubes ever go down in price? I would guess that demand is shrinking due to the advance of digital FP. $1700 for a LUG seems out of line. In the future I would think that LUGs will hold there value better, and may be the only CRT's that will have substantial value. I know they are in limited supply but really at what point will the demand be low enough they will lower the price. My opinion is they should be less than $500 each or less. I can't see spending $5k on tubes even if I had a brand new 9500 or 1209s that just needed tubes.

I know for one thing there are at least 1000 VDC/Electrohome PJ out there in simulators. Two companies in Florida service at least half of those and they are run mostly 24/7,thats over 8500 hours in a year. One service person I know says their contract is to replace the tubes between 5000-6000 hours. so the demand is still there and they wont go down any time soon. i think there are three companies that still make the tubes, with VDC and Thomas being the Largest.

Good luck with that $500 per tube

As Dragan said, there's applications for stuff we don't even think about, and the cost of production per tube actually goes up per tube I'd think as demand goes down.

Hehe i agree with Curt, but its a resounding, very optomistic YES from me.
I know from talking with one of the service techs i got the bunch of thomas tubes from that they would order 125 tubs at a time and they cost 1100 each for that many in one order. The less you order of a custom tube the more they go up. So if we ever needed to get tubes from Thomas we now know the price for an order of 125 tubes.

Just like it has been mentioned, the tube prices will probably remain high. This will also be what eventually moves all but the most fanatical to digital.
Nah, tube pricing has been a relative constant. As Alfred E Neuman says:

What, me worry?

Relatively constant, but it has went up. The difference is that now when faced with the prospect of retubing your pj with new tubes, one has to decide if maybe it is time to switch.

Agreed I think the tubes are mostly more expensive to some degree (Greg's 9" are about where VDC prices used to be). But the price of the projectors themselves is much lower and digitals are getting better and cheaper all the time. All of which changes the equation. I replaced the green in my newly acquire Runco 1100 (Barco 1209s) and it was only worth it to me because I got the projector(s) so cheap (I got two but it took two to get one working one). If I had to replace all three tubes, I probably would have stayed with my Data 808s for a couple more years and then gone digital.

I sure do hope not.

You can still get tubes from Tubular outlet and LUGS are pretty reasonable at one grand each, BUT, the customer service obviously sucks so you are taking a gamble at that price.

If I was to retube right now, there is no way that I would pay 1600 bucks a tube for the stack.

I'd like to see NEW LUG's around the 800 each mark. Then I would definitely retube. Especially now that there is a streaking fix for the G90's.

Tubes prices are expected to go down but not now. People who don`t replace their Tv much often tends to have 8-10 years tvs as well. Thats why CRT repairing business is always high.
