(after rebate, of course)

Maybe its not as well built as the iPaq, or something, but it has the same specifications and is hundreds less.

Just wonder if they ships outside the States
Wish I hadn't bought my Toshibe e310 now.

I would really have liked to have that CF slot for a network card.

Pretty typical hey? :)
Looks very interesting...anything written up on the range of the IR port?
Where do you see the IR port?
Any opinions on how much better this might work as a HTPC controller than a Fujitsu Stylistic Point 510? Would a program like DTPro or MainLobby be able to be run from one of these, or should I stick with the 510 I laready have and try to make it work?

thanks,

MurrayW

This page mentions a "Standard v1.2 (115 kbps) Infrared Port"

The product explorer on Dell's Website does not indicate where the IR port is (front or on the side).

What kind of remote control software are people running on pocket pc devices? I have a pronto tsu2000 but can't resist a nice color screen, and at that price... :)
A great solution to upgrade a Pronto set up is Netremote... It will emulate a ProntoPro on your PocketPC, with some additional features (2 way communication, no need for line of sight, etc).

Check out the netremote thread for more information

There are also some Pronto emulators which should work on this device (with or without and IR extender to improve on the built-in IrDa port)

You can check my Home Control software that uses skinable clients that run on WinCE, Pocket PC, or Win32 platforms. You can download it from www.cebotics.com and it's free.

I think the $199 price with a CF and SD port is a great deal. Add a Socket CF WiFi card and you have a wireless remote.

Here's a thread on the software http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showt...hreadid=189076

Would the barebones system shown be enough for use in htpc application?

Thanks

Gregg
Thought I'd pass along this review and commentary regarding the "mail in rebate"

It would depend on what you are running on the HTPC. The spec was for an automation controller only.

Scott
You should be fine with the barebone system...

I am using an Ipaq 3100 (B&W, 16Mb of RAM) to test NetRemote, and have enough memory for even the largest CCF files (The best Pronto has only 8 Mb of memory). Speed is not an issue compared to my Pronto TSU 2000.

IMHO, for an HTPC remote application, I would go for the barebone version, the craddle (or the extended battery) and a low power WiFi card (BT is also a worthy alternative)... as I've found that wireless networking draws the batteries down a little bit too fast

Can anyone recommend a particular WiFi card compatible with the Dell Axim? I'm using a Linksys 802.11b router.

Thanks,

Ken
K-Wood -

I've been using the SMC WiFi card with my Maestro, and it's worked great.

In fact, I just ordered another one (from buy.com for $81) to go with the Axim I just order (with screen protectors and dock for $288)

Total cost for NetRemote (or Housebot) client -> $369 - $50 = $319. Not too shabby. Considering the Maestro set up cost me $450 for the unit + $109 for the card in February ($559).

Now I've got one for the theater, and one for the rest of the house for audio.

You could go with the latest Linksys WiFi card (WCF-12)... this way, if you have any problem, Linksys won't be able to blame someone else ;)

Seriously, I have been using this card ($59) for a few months with a D-Link 1000AP access point without any outstanding problem (Just make sure you get the latest drivers...)

One benefit of this card, besides price, is that it can also works on a laptop (with the Prism2.5 drivers and a generic CF/PCMCIA adapter). Power consumption is pretty good: on my iPaq 3130, I get more than 5 hours between charges after enabling the power saving mode

Happy shopping
Just met with our Dell enterprise rep today, says the new pocketpc is going over well at Dell, lots of happy customers.

May need to use my 10% discounts soon :) don't know if the rebate will apply then?? forgot to ask :(

Oh well not ready to buy yet.

Always wait for version 1.1
While I see all the benefits of using a PDA as a remote control, does anyone use it as their *only* remote control? I see couple of downsides to it compared to a Pronto:

1. Picking up the remote and finding out that it is out of charge

2. Clicking on a button and waiting for the wifi card to wake up and do its thing

Any comments?
