I just noticed that my Dish 5000 receiver has a new firmware update waiting to be installed. I have my system set up to not update the firmware unless I tell it to. I am always concerned that it may mess up my HDTV Modulator or something! Anyone tried the new update yet?

Yes indeed, I too have been offered a "new, free system upgrade".


I will not accept it until I can verify that it does not screw the pooch, like the previous one did. Let me do a little research & I'll get back to you.

It's probably the 641 update (or is it 741? I'm away from

home for a week and can't recall, but I think it's 641).

And it's a very good update.


For one, it now allows you to add 4-digit channels to your

Favorites. So, for example, you can now add HBOHD to your

"Movies" group (if you had one), as the 61.5/148 channels

are assigned 4-digit station numbers.


I've been using it for around 2 months now (unless there's

yet a newer one than that, because I let it download without

my confirmation) and it's problem-free.

I checked my 5000 which I inadvertantly left on "auto accept" and the version is 742. I do not know if this is the version you are being "offered". In the event that it is, the 742 update works just fine with my HDTV RF modulator. I really only use the 5000 for receiving HDTV so I do not know any specific changes from the earlier version.

Thanks. I currently have 741, so the new version being 742 makes sense. I just wish Dish would provide some documentation about what their upgrades do! I too only use my 5000 for HDTV, so am glad to hear you have not seen any issues yet. Please let us know if you do find any changes. I will be holding off for a bit.

I upgraded from 741 to 742 last night. I can't tell the difference. It did not fix the problems I am having with breakups on the HD demo channel.

Main Menu

#6 System Setup

#1 Installation

#3 System Info


It will be listed along with a bunch of other stuff, the first 3 digits are the reference.
