Let me start off by saying, that I am NOT an audiophile. Nonetheless, I've been looking on upgrading my home entertainment centre and, as far as the audio is concerned, I've decided that I'd rather go for a pair of exceptional floor-standing speakers (plus a subwoofer, and maybe a centre channel as well) instead of the usual HTIB arrangement. I'm working with a pretty tight budget, however, so ideally I'd only like to spend about $400 dollars for the whole shebang, max being $500 to $800. Anyway, if somebody out there can provide me with some more economical choices it would be much appreciated. Also, these speakers will be placed in a living room measuring 9'x12'. Thanks in advance everyone.

Wow that Jamo package looks absolutely perfect! Thanks so much for the link!

Though, is there much difference between the Denon 1612 vs 1712, because I think I'd rather go for the former mainly due to the fact that it's a lot cheaper. :p

Thanks for the replies and assistance guys, it's much appreciated. Is there anywhere else where I might be able to pick up that Jamo home theatre system (assuming that's what I end up going with). Amazon isn't exactly a viable option for me.

I mean you did say exceptional speakers, and since you weren't dying to get everything all at once I'm going to make a slightly diff suggestion from other guys here.

This is a highly regarded set of towers: ($650 pair)
Swan Diva 4.2

I would pair it with an AVR receiver I find on closeout.

Something $300-400 made by Harman, Denon, Pioneer, Yamaha

Just giving you something to think about, there are a lot of awesome towers out there in your price range.

These fronts don't look too bad, thoughts?

By the way, would it make more sense if I get a nice set of bookshelf speakers as my fronts for now and then later on, when I fill out the rest of my HT, I can just relegate them to the rear? If so, then I guess that would be the better option value-wise, wouldn't it?

The pioneer budget speakers are outstanding value for the price, I think they are the best audio deal around right now.

I would just get all 5.0 pioneer speakers in one shot, but that is just me and everybody has different wants, needs, and budgets. Some people are happy with no center, some people like huge bass, do what you think will be best.

imaginos, you can always check these two sites for an avr and possibly speakers too. www.frys.com--they are having a clearence sale on some Pioneer, Denon and Yamaha avr's, as well as here www.accessories4less.com . Ac4l have refurbished units that come with a warranty, and if you would like to get an extended one for peace of mind they offer those as well. There are many who use A4l and seem to have a very good experience with them. Another thing to note is that Fry's also usually has sales on speakers too. For under $500 you can get a pair of Polk Audio RTi 4's, a pair of RTi 6's and a CSi 3 center channel. As a side note, the 4's and 6's are both bookshelf speakers. If you want a pair of towers for fronts they have a pair of RTi 8's for $159/ea.

When/If they come back in stock, the JBL190 towers at newegg are the best $130 speaker you will ever buy. They are practically unknown, but they are even better than my other favorite, the Pioneer FS-52. They replaced much more expensive speakers in my HT. I'm building speakers with a raw materials cost of $500 each, to try to get an even better sound than what I have now.

You have to spend $500+ per speaker with Polk or any other major brand speaker aside from the Pioneers to get the same imaging and precise SQ as these 190s.

In regards to the 1712 vs 1612, the difference can be quite significant. The 1712 and 1713, which are the same price at A4L, have MultEQ XT room correction which is a much better room correction than the MultEQ the 1612 has. The volume difference in a few watts wont make much of a difference in volume, however the better room correction can help a lot integrate speakers into your room.

The JBL have impressive low end response. I've heard them a few times and their bass and mid-bass is pretty good for the price

Also..

1712 = 7.1 without Airplay

1713 = 5.1 with Airplay

Ahh, thanks for clearing that up guys. Looks like I'll be going with the 1713 then. Might as well since, as "Petden" pointed out, it's the same price as the 1712 at A4L (which is where I'll be getting it from). Don't think I'll find much use out of that Airplay feature, though.

Well guys, I'm very grateful for all the helpful advice I've received through this forum and, thanks to you audio pros, I believe I've been able to narrow down my choices to two speakers. Which are: "The Paradigm Monitor 7 V6" & "The Pioneer SP-FS52"

I'm fairly certain I can get the Paradigm fronts for under $400 through a classified ad that I saw on "Kijiji", hopefully after a bit of haggling. Having said that, I suppose I should mention that I'm from Canada, but I also happen to be within driving distance of the border so I have limited access to the American market. Anyway, my plan now is to follow up with the seller and negotiate the price, if I can, plus audition the speakers a bit. If all goes well, that'll turn out to be a real bargain, but if not then I can always pick up a pair of Pioneer fronts from BB America without too much difficulty.

If any of you have any comments on my current course of action, then please feel free to share them.

I'd go with the Pioneer FS22 fronts and BS22 surrounds, and C22 center. You will be happy with the sound and the cost. When you get the cash find a 12" or better yet a 15" sub. They can be had for under $200.
