New home cinema setup and media streaming

Hi guys.

I'm setting up this configuration:
Anthem MRX1140
B&W 702 S2 + HTM71 S2 + 707 S2 + VP62R TL + VP62 + SB1000 PRO
Native 4K JBL projector

I posted a question in another thread about which bluray player to buy.

Anyway, I don't want to physically insert BR disk everytime, but I want to rip them and play from a NAS that I plan to install at home.

I'd need suggestion on:

  • BR ripping without loosing A/V quality (any guide? post? DIY?)
  • any Synology NAS would be ok, or should have specific requirement to satisfy A/V quality?
  • could I stream those contents via (e.g.) NVIDIA Shield (or other)?

Thanks for your precious assistance

or go to makemkv forums and they explain it there. You want to make a remux of your UHD discs which is a basically a 1:1 copy of the movie with no loss in A/V quality. You will need a UHD drive that is capable of ripping them with makemkv. You can find a list of them in the thread here or on makemkv forums.

If you want a Synology NAS then I would get the one that has enough drive bays. I personally use a DS1821+ but I don't have my Plex server on that. I just use it for my storage and I run a Plex server off my pc. You could also run the Plexiglas server off your shield. Really depends on if it is just for your theater and you are direct playing everything or you are going to want to share it with other family and your server will need to transcode. Also you want a Nvidia Shield Pro in order to be able to play them back with Atmos etc. Apple TV doesn't passthrough audio like truehd Atmos.

So, no minimum requirements of speed/other for a NAS (except for bays and space)?
And, if I install a Nvidia Shield Pro would I need Plex or Nvidia device will make the whole work?

Thanks again
...and Nvidia is the best so far, or would you recommend else?
For what you sya your use is going to be, a nVidia Shield is probably the best choice. Install Kodi or setup Plex for a nice interface.
For your NAS, if the budget allows get a model that has space for SSDs to be used as cache. Also, try get a model that allows for RAM expansion. For simple streaming what it ships with is probably sufficient but if you start using the NAS for other things it can help. When you buy your hard drives, try not to buy more than one from a vendor at a time. On the chance a bad batch was shipped to that vendor you'll only have potentially one bad drive. And when it comes to drive failure time, you're less likely to have more than one die at a time.

Yes, the Nvidia shield is by far the best streaming device if you plan to use plex. It will work with basically every possible video & AUDIO codec. As far as a NAS goes I would personally go the DIY route and use unraid, it's extremely easy to use and has a very large community. If you plan on ripping the UHD disks I believe there are only a few drives that can do that, the one I own is the LG WH16NS40 which can. You can install the drive in an unraid nas and have it do its magic if you want.
Thanks.

Could Plex handle ripped UHD disks? I mean, menu, audio choice, etc...same as physical disk?
Thanks.

No not to my knowledge but I've never tried it, I don't think plex can even play iso's though. It can handle any 4k video with multiple audio tracks (assuming you are using a client that can output those codecs, which the 2019 shield tv pro can do). The only real issue with plex is the client-side with certain subs and their file types, you also need to have your home network setup with fast enough speeds to stream 4k files.

A perfect UHD rip would be a 1:1 iso. You could store these on an unraid server but you're very limited in the type of client to play this, the oppo used to be the go to, not sure what's out there now.
Thanks.

Plex will be better with something like a mkv file instead of a iso of a disc. I don't think it does menus, or has limited support so it might be hit or miss. And honestly, if you set Plex up right (or Kodi) with the library function that will be your menu instead of the disc menu. You'll have movie art and the movie descriptions showing up on the Plex UI, and anything you would use the menu for on a disc like audio track or subtitle you choose through Plex's controls. Rip the movie only, and keep the audio track or tracks you need, and encode with a good bitrate to x265 and you can achieve near original quality and relatively efficient storage utilization. Space can get eaten up real quick with UHD and multiple HD audio tracks.

At one point, and it may still, MakeMKV's forums had a sticky where you can buy a pre-flashed UHD-capable drive. They are trustworthy, I have a couple friends who have ordered from them.

Players like zidoo will be your choice if you want menu. Comes with nice movie posters interface similar to plex.
