New Home Theater Set up and Recommendations

526 Views 8 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  shadyJ

First off let me thank everyone on this forum for the great information posted on a daily basis.  I'm learning a ton reading these threads.

I'm looking for recommendations in setting up a home theater for my family room.  The set up looks to be unique and could pose a challenge due to how open the area is.  I'm not sure how much info is needed for advice, let me apologize if I give to much information.

- Goal

Set up a home theatre for music listening in addition to movie watching.  I'm not an audiofile but I'm looking to learn and develop a better ear.  I enjoy listening to a wide variety of music.  My hope is to get a decent set up that can be expanded on in the future.  My plan is to invest in a quality 3.1 or 3.2 set up and expand as funds allow.  I'd also like to set up speakers in the kitchen to listen to music while I cook.

- First Challenge

Large Space

The family room is two stories with an opening to a walk way on the second floor. The dinette and kitchen have normal ceiling heights. The dotted lines in the diagram represent open area in the room with the black cubes being support beams.  The television will be on the top wall of the diagram mounted on a chimney.  The chimney is flanked on either side by windows up to the ceiling.  The family room is about 272sqft but if you include the space it opens up to it gets much bigger.  The dinette is about 100sqft and the kitchen is about 168sqft. This means there is potentially 540sqft of space well as the open area above the family room to work with.

- Second Challenge

Aesthetics

I'd love to do whatever is necessary to get the best home theatre set up but looks are important and my better half will have the final say.  A minimal foot print is important.  I like bookshelf speakers for this reason.  Wireless speakers seem great but I'm not sure what kind of impact wireless has on sound quality.

- Third Challenge

Budget will limit this set up.  I'd like to spend less than 1500.  I'm not sure if this is feasible.  I'm up for used components.

- My current plan

3.1 / 3.2 set up with a few additional speakers in the kitchen / dinnette for music when cooking.

Will I need two subs for this space?

Bookshelf speakers or floor speakers?

I'm looking for the most cost effective solutions and I'm open to alternatives to the ideas I mentioned above.

Thanks in advance for your help.

I recommend that you consider getting a pair of the KEF Q300 speakers for your mains, and a Q200c center speaker.

That will run you a total of $1150 (KEF Direct).

Those are excellent speakers, and the Q300s are front-ported, which makes placement close to walls or in shelves possible.

One 12" subwoofer with at least 400 watts RMS should be sufficient.

I would omit the fireplace if possible, and use that wall for a 60" TV and speakers in an entertainment center.

With your gear in that location, the sound should carry well to the whole house, and no added speakers would be needed.

KEFs will overwhelm his budget quick. I would be looking at some Infinity Primus speaker when they go on sale. Maybe a Hsu speaker/sub package . Arx speakers are also worth looking into at this budget range.
For your price range - look at an HSU package - as linked above.
Thanks for the input everyone. I'll check out the HSU package. Is one sub goin to be enough? If it's better adding to the setup piecemeal I don't mind saving to be able to affordable a more functional system and adding pieces down the road.

What is the best location for bookshelf speakers? Can I mount them on a wall?

Is mounting the tv on the fireplace and flanking it with speakers a bad idea? The reason I'm doin it that way is it gives us the most floor space for couches. I planned on building a media cabinet for the receiver, Mac mini, nas, and cable box.

3.1 set I would get the Hybrid 3, 3.1 with the VTF-3 Mk4

You want the tweeter at ear level. You can mount them on a wall is you buy mounts for them
If one sub isn't enough, you can always just add another later. I would go with one sub for now and see if that is enough. As for the tweeters being ear level, you can always aim the tweeters if you get an adjustable mount. The very best budget mount is the Videosecu side-clamping mount , nothing else can touch it at anywhere near that price, except for te AM40 Pinpoint, but the Videosecu mounts are just clones of the AM40s anyway.

As for mounting a TV on the fireplace, it is widely practiced but usually not a good idea- here is why .

Those mounts look great thank you!

Any recommendations for a good AVR to go with this system?

Looks like I'm going to be able to get into the home while its under construction to prewire for the home theater.  Anything to look out for?  I'll be using an electrician to help me make sure things are done correctly.
The Denon X series would be great AVRs. Yamahas, Pioneers, Marantz all make decent AVRs, it just depends on what features you desire the most at your budget.
