New Home Theater Setup - help wanted

1725 Views 43 Replies 13 Participants Last post by  jaybo666
Hi All,

first time jumping into home theaters so wanted to ask the community for help.

I just finished my basement and I want to do a mid tier home Theatre setup.

Best Buy recommend MartinLogan 7.1 setup (Dynamo 400 sub, motion 6i center, motion 2i surrounds (4), motion 15i bookshelf (2)) with a Denon AVr - X1600Hreceiver. All in it’s going to be 2.3k

Main question: this is far more expensive than a low budget tier setup (Polk, etc). Is this worth the extra money or should I go to a budget brand or an even higher end? Want to make sure the MartinLogan motion series will deliver for the extra cost.

thanks!

While I love the Martin Logan setup in my secondary room that I bought at about 50 percent off, I'd look at Emotiva as they use similar technology at a much lower price point and offer affordable three way centers.

That would allow you to get a better subwoofer like the SVS PB1000 pro (free returns if not happy).

That sub looks like a beast and a big upgrade. Is it too much power for the receiver I am thinking about going with that is 80W per channel? https://www.bestbuy.com/site/denon-...lexa-compatible-black/6344750.p?skuId=6344750

No, subwoofer does not use any amp power from the receiver as it has its own built in amplifier.

The subwoofer actually relieves some amp power from the receiver as you set a crossover to the subwoofer, usually at 80hz, which relieves the receiver's amps from having to power the speakers to lower bass where most amp power is used if running speakers full range.

I installed the prior version of that receiver at my friend's house 2 years ago and it is a solid choice.

I'm guessing your choice of small center speaker might preclude he use of the Emotiva C1 center and using small towers for left and right?

Emotiva C1+ center dimensions: 7-¾” high x 20-1/2” wide x 8-1/4” deep .

No, that will work. I like their bookshelves and surround sound too. You obviously know your stuff so I think I’m going to go that route. Thanks!

I was leaning towards C2+. Worth the upgrades price and will work with my receiver?

Well, actually, it is others on AVS that have bought the Emotiva stuff that convinced me that indeed they are a solid option to Martin Logan.

The consensus is hard to refute from reputable members who value high price/value gear.

Looking forward to your impressions and if you need any setup tips there's many other than myself that can point you in the right direction.

Certainly will but triple check dimensions as there have been "oh my, this is huge" comments from some members, but no regrets.

Can you swing towers for the front left/right or are bookshelves the only option?
If you choose to go with the SVS PB1000 pro, order directly with SVS as they offer free returns.

There is a sealed version which is smaller (but with same size amp and driver) and suitable for a smaller rooms, the SB1000 pro, but the ported PB version offers 40 percent more maximum sound pressure level.

$500 SB 1000 pro 13.5" (H) 13" (W) 14.76" (D)

$600 PB 1000 pro 18.9" (H) 15" (W) 20" (D)

I loved ML Motion 20 when I started building my home theatre - but they are very expensive, I was able to get some used Motion 20 but a matching center was north of 500 bucks- so I decided to take it slow dabbled in refurb/FB marketplace and built out, once I assess my usage I will upgrade slowly - the only items I bought brand new were Sony X90CH, RSL Subwoofer 10S and Polk S55 towers which I moved to Zone 2 eventually.

I would suggest investing in a good sub like others suggested - the reason I went with RSL was the price point including wireless transmitter, reviews etc. I was also considering SVS, Rhythmik and HSU -almost pulled trigger on SVS.

You can give a shot to Emotiva, Chane, HTD. BTW, I loved ML sound too, but BB folks always tend to be "salesy" instead of genuine help, at least that was my experience. They will play a specific recording of "Hotel California" during the demo tuned to their environment - and I know this because I went to three different BB and all of them followed the same approach!

Good insight. I’ll do some
Homework and report back.

Have to go bookshelves. I got the home theatre, but wife got the nice bookcases that take up entire wall

Most important 2 speakers are the center and sub for a surround sound system so you will be fine.

For Bookshelf Speakers give a serious consideration to KEFs, loved their sound. And they have good deals from time to time, KEF with a killer sub would sound fantastic. Have heard good things about Q Acoustics too.
Two thangs:
  • Despite the pinky in the air latte elitist snobs on this site, there is absolutely nothing wrong with Polk speakers. Sure there are others that might yield better sound but Polk is not a bad starter brand whatsoever. Just be sure to buy at least their Monitor or RTi series and avoid their entry level speakers.
  • ‘The other train of thought is that unlike electronics like AVRs and sources, if you have a very good set of speakers, those generally do not need upgrading for years. So some say to buy the best most capable speakers now regardless of price and keep them forever while spending less on electronics that will be replaced in a year or two.

I’m going to order tonight. One last question. As I built my basement I put the speaker wires in the wall, but didn’t for the subwoofer and I’ll have trouble getting a wire from receiver to sub. Did the sub you recommend have wireless capabilities or any other suggestions?
Great feedback from everyone so far. Definitely going to update things and share my experience. Wish I did this before wasting a trip to Bestbuy
no research is a waste of time, so that trip was worth it in a way. anyway we dont get those Emotiva down here but goodness me thats cheap for what you get.

build your room around the centre and sub, thats what does most of the work in a movie. so go the biggest center you can ( C2+) and sub of choice. books for the rest of the speaker mix.

you actually dont state the size of your room, seating set up and pj or tv (guessing a tv) these things will help give better tips.
