I recently bought a home theater system. The receiver is a Pioneer VSX-D414. I'm connected to my DVD and my HD-DVR with two digital cables. The HD-DVR is a SA 8000 HD.

When I watch something on the DVD player I get a Dolby signal. It seems that whatever I watch on my HD receiver I get a "Digital" signal. Even if I'm watching NFL on FOX in HD I never get the Dolby signal. My provider is (choke) Adelphia Cable.

It sounds great just the same but I would think if something is broadcast in Dolby 5.1 I should at least receive a Dolby signal, not just a digital signal. I also receive this same signal watching analog broadcast programs, but I imagine they are converted to digital somehow by the receiver.

I hope I haven't made this too complicated, I've tried posting this in a couple of other areas and either I get a response that doesn't make sense or it looks like the person responding didn't read my post and try to understand.

Any help is appreciated, of course!

You have to set the HD receiver to output Dolby Digital, not PCM. It should be under the audio or setup options.

Yes, that was the problem. I set audio to Dolby and it worked fine. I had seen that option months before I got my home theater but completely forgot about it until yesterday.
