New Image File - Replay require activation

695 Views 12 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  dufisity
I have a 45XX that crashed. It had been getting flakier by the day (random reboots). I figured that I would try the big fix, so I replaced one of the hard drives since all the data was scrambled. Extract could not retrieve any of the programs stored on the hard drives.

To ensure that I did not have a repetition of the problem, I performed low level formats on both drives. 2 days later when the low level formats completed successfuly, I was able to put a new image file on the drives and replace them in the Replay.

Now I am getting a prompt for activation. I have already paid for activation on this unit.

The bottom line is that I am not a happy camper. Not only did I lose over a hundred and twenty hours of recorded programs including the full day of 24 (my wife is really pissed since she missed it the first time it was shown), but now the unit tells me that I have to activate the box again. I can't even get to the menu to set up the ethernet connection so that it can verify activation.

Has anybody seen this problem before? Is there a simple solution instead of going into phone support hell tomorrow morning?

Thanks,

Jim

The image you used doesn't match the serial # for the unit. The next time

you net connect, the activation server should fix things up and you'll be

back to normal.
Do a 382-zones factory restore... go through the setup process again, and let it do a few net connects... the server just needs to update the activation status on the box.

In order for the serial to be matched, a 382-Z needs to be performed. That is when the software synchs itself with the hardware that contains the serial... then the SW & HW will be on the same page, so to speak.
It worked great. Thanks for the help. You saved me from tech support hell.

Cheers!

I honestly don't remember, it's been a while, but I could have sworn all

that was needed was to check activation, either manually or through

"Net Connect"

I can also easily believe 382-zones is necessary, I really don't remember,

but I'm a little surprised that step isn't included in the rtvpatch instructions,

as the 5.0 images on the FTP site do not match people's serial # on their

motherboards. If 382-zones in necessary, then it seems many more folks

would have posted activation problems after drive upgrades and copying

the MPG partition to preserve your shows would seem more difficult to

perform.

Any time I re-image... the easiest way to get rid of the info that is contained from the original user/creator of the image (zip code, etc.) is to do a 382-Zones.

Perhaps it should be a step in the re-image process (as long as you don't mind losing your mpegs). However, I am a huge proponent of backing up your data (in any environment)! So that has never been an issue for me.
I'm with sfhub...I'm pretty sure that I did not need to do a 382 zones for either of my 5k upgrades.
You don't have to do a factory reset on the 5xxx's - just net connect and you should be good to go.

Hmmm. As far as I can tell unless you upgraded from an old image from your machine you must 382 zones to get past the actvation nag.
Fortunately it worked for AJS, and to put the record straight... I currently only have 4k's, so I should have prefaced the whole thing by saying that.

In my experience, I have never been able to get around the nag with any input from the remote ('cept for 382-Zones). So that is always what I did to fix it.

As for the 5k's, I have not had much experience with re-imaging those drives... so I'll defer to the pro's on that one. :)
I got a pre-activated RTV4504, so does this mean that in order to get past the activation screen, I have to reset to factory settings (382-Z) and lose all my shows? I coulda swore that SB told me to unplug, restart, and go 243-Z. Maybe they told me 382-Z, but failed to discuss losing all recorded shows. So, what's the story?
