There is still no store to buy a plasma in that I've seen that lets one compare the displays against one another in a realistic fashion.

Magnolia Hi-Fi in Palo Alto, CA is the closest, though.

First, they have a heckuva selection:

Sony 32 and 43

Panasonic 42 and 50

Fujitsu 42 (4233), 50 and 61

Pionner Elite 50

Also, the Sharp 30 LCD.

Obviously, the next statement is going to brand me a moron to many of you but I'll say it anyway: On the PBS demo loop HD feed, I still think the 480-line Panasonic 42" display had in some ways the best overall picture. It was not the highest resolution picture, but overall it was pretty grand.

There was junk being fed to too many of the displays to do them justice. The Fujitsu 61 looked really terrible, for example, with whatever crap they were putting into it.

I will spend more time there without the girlfriend and report some more.

Thanks Mark. I've heard good things about Magnolia Hi-Fi and am thinking about dropping by there some time at lunch hour. I work in Menlo Park.
