New member with toshiba "green push"coment.

I have spent hours at bb and cc looking at the HL167 models. Today I looked at the 42 sitting between the Sony and a Sammy. I could not for the life of me see the green everyone seems to be talking about. When ever I thought I saw the green push I looked at the sammy and it had the same thing going on. For the most part I saw no green. In fact the panel looked every bit as good as the Lg and the Samsung. The Sony look a bit better than all of them. I really am thinking of buying the Toshiba, however this green push issue has really made me apprehensive. Has anyone had good luck with this tv? I have read plenty of bad. I am just curious if anyone loves the set. Its nice to be a member. I have been lurking for quite some time now

My Samsung does display a slight brownish-green tint on some shadows and shaded facial tones *ON SOME PROGRAMS AND SOME CHANNELS ONLY*, so I don't know whether to blame the set or the way the program is encoded. However, the HL167 in the local Circuit City, the last time I was there, was playing an HD disc of some kind, which should have higher resolution and encoding accuracy than any satellite broadcast, and it really was green-tinted all over. Turning the color settings way out of normal helped, but didn't completely eliminate it. Maybe they have fixed it, and congratulations if they have. The best thing for you to do would probably be to see if there's any way to check the manufacturing date on the set you want to buy and see if you can get a very recent one.

And yes, Sony's quality does beat the other sets, but as far as I'm concerned they're not in the same price range considering that the others are frequently on sale. Your opinion may vary.
I just got the Toshiba 42hl167. It did have a green tint to it out of the box. It was very frustrating. It showed up in gray areas and in faces under certain light.

I used a few different setups that were posted here and the third one finally worked great.

It was a great deal. At CC if you're a AAA member you can get 8% off a single purchase, once. We did this before the end of the year when the deal was 10%. We got the set for $1080 before tax.

Now that it's set up nicely (which also got rid of "blockiness" in the blacks) it's amazing. The HD-A2 looks stunning and GOOD hd cable looks great.
I've heard the 177 is superior in PQ to the 167 and green weenie push has been resolved - but I don't own it to offer testimonial directly.

LX177 has 120Hz I think (167 doesn't)

The green push was common to both models, however...if it's been resolved, I don't know...I didn't see any posts about that, but then I don't read all the posts either
I got the 42hl167 in December (manufacutre date of august I believe) and the green is evident to an extent, but like everyone else only in darker areas. HD Looks awesome on it though, especially with the football games. But I honestly probably wouldnt have noticed it unless I read theese forums. I got a discount on a professional calibration when I bought the tv, so I am having that done next weekend.
I recently purchased (2 weeks ago - December 2007 sticker on the back) the 42" HL167 in spite of all of the comments about green push. The value proposition was just to great. The set provides a great picture, and no set is great out of the box, they all have to be tweaked. IMHO - It's not really a problem if I have to watch a certain scene in a certain DVD to notice a problem.

PS - Based on what's in the forums the trouble free TV doesn't exist.
I don't think the point is that is hard to notice.

The point is: one shouldn't have to have an issue after paying a pretty large amount of money, and should expect a problem-free product...if any abnormality is there, no matter how hard to notice, no matter what kind of scene, it's s defect, and I think then one didn't get value for the money spent, or satisfaction...

This is why i put off buying an LCD till mid-08...hopefully the new 540 and 550 thin bezel Tosh's won't have the green push...350 thin bezel also doesn't have it...
Will someone please let me know what defect/trouble free 42" LCD is available for under $1,200 so I can return my HL167 and buy it?

EdL
prices of 350 series Regza will come down close to that point soon...i think. (40")

OR: you can get the previous 42" Regza series HL67 (not 167), which don't have green push for about that much online...(they're still available online and b/m stores, I think)

Have you considered the Panasonic TH-42PZ77u? It has a matte finish screen just like an LCD and has far superior picture quality, IMO, with no "common thread" problems. The out of the box settings don't do the TV justice but it's very easy to tweak.

I'm on my second TV, Tosh replaced my 42" LX177 for a 46" my issues were vertical banding, clouding and some flickering. My December replacement does not suffer from any of the issues I had with the 42". Never had any green push on the 42" and that was an August build, I believe Tosh resolved it prior to Aug.

Get the LX177 December build you won't regret it! I am completely satisfied the panel is almost perfect. As posted in the LX thread zero dead pixels, no banding, clouding, flashlights, TBE, NONE! Colors are pretty spot on out of the box...Yea even I can't believe it!!

A really crappy SD feed:

would be great if you can get SD/BD/HD shots of the same scene, so they can actually be compared...

(but the scenes do look good...no greenish anything)
I've been tweaking myself into a tizzy lately and I'm satisfied with the picture, except for the whites. They seem to be light grayish, it's especially noticeable on the iMac commericials and CNNHD when what should be a red, white, & blue background is red, very light gray, & blue. Can anybody tell me what adjustments I can make to get my whites whiter?

PS - I have gone into the service menu, but have not made any adjustments because I'm afraid, very afraid to screw up something royally.

Edl,

that seems to be where the problem originates; have you seen the last two pages on the "Green thread":

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showt...890638&page=38

they post some real promising cuts/drives for the service menu, just be mindful to 'write-down' your original setup ones and you shouldn't have a problem. FYI, i don't have this model (42hl167) but have the settings saved just in case i chose to buy.

Of course, you may just want to return/trade-in for another model all-together.

I have the 46LX177 and I am extremely happy with it. No Green.
The LX177 is beyond my budget and I can't use a plasma because of the amount of light in the room (3 large west windows). It looks like I will have to go into the service menu and make the adjustments.

When in the service menu, what controls on the remote actually change the settings?

EdL
up and down change the parameter, ch up and ch down change between the settings

mute twice on the remote and menu on the TV get into the service menu
