New Receiver + Multi Zone Question

931 Views 4 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  david_nc
I have the upgrade bug and need some advise as to my setup. I currently have a Denon 3802. It is still working fine but I am looking for additional capabilities as well as the newer technology. Info is as follows:

7.1 surround setup with Speakers:

Center: Definitve Technology ProCenter 2000

Fronts: Definitive Technology BP6B

Surrounds: B&W CDS6 S3 In-Wall

Backs: B&W CWM 500 In-Wall

Subwoofer: Velodyne FSX-12

Other Speakers: each pair has it own volume dial control

Zone 1: 2 speakers kitchen, 2 speakers living room, 1 speaker bathroom

Zone 2: 4 speakers outdoor

Other Components:

Direct TV HD-DVR box

Xbox 360

Sony Blu ray player

Niles SS-6 Speaker selector (this is what I currently use to run 2 other zones with Denon 3806)

My goal is to operate the 2 zones (one with 5 speakers-indoor and the another with 4 outdoor speakers) from the receiver not using the Niles if possible. Ideally I would like to be able to have the kids be able to play xbox with the 7.1 setup and me and the misses to listen to a different source on the outdoor speakers. I do not believe I can accomplish this now with the Denon 3802. Could be wrong?

Other considerations for the new receivers: (looking at Pioneer and Onkyo)

Price range less than $1200

Ability to add amp later.

Ability to utilize Audysey or the Pioneer equivalent to set up room speakers.

Ability to use IPOD/Iphone as a source.

How important is networking?

Current models considering:

Pioneer VSX-23TXH vs SC-25

Onkyo TX-NR1007 vs TX-SR707

I would really appreciate any help you can offer.

You're not going to be able to connect 9 speakers in 2 alternate zones without some kind of switchbox/speaker selector. The zone 2 output on the receiver is only for 2 speakers.
I have 3 pairs of speakers (soon to be 4) on Zone 2 of my VSX-23. I use impedance-matching volume controls in each room. There are 2 jumpers on the volume control that are set for the number of speakers connected in parallel. This keeps the load around 8 ohms and allows local control of the speakers. Would something like this work for you?

david_nc: Thanks for your reply. I believe I currently have Niles volume controls (5 total for the 4 pairs of speakers plus single in the bathroom). That would most likely work but still not clear on how you have the speaker wire hooked up (your 3 pairs of speakers to the AVR).

Chris,

If you're not going to use the selector box (probably with a resistor to protect your speakers), make sure your volume controls are impedance matching. I have the three pairs of speaker wires in the closet next to my stereo rack. I used a really high-tech solution to connect the three pairs of cables - closed end crimp connectors!
(they're like a crimp wire nut in case you don't know what they are.) I have the three pairs of cables conencted to a pair that goes directly to the zone 2 outputs. For a neater installation, you could use terminal strips mounted to some surface. For music in the kitchen, bedroom, and deck, the crimp connectors work just fine.
