My current receiver is an older Onkyo TX-SR600 without HDMI connectivity. I want to upgrade to a new receiver with HDMI 1.3 connectivity. Since I already have the XA2 HD-DVD player that uses the Reon chip for video processing and upscaling to 1080P, why would I need a new receiver that performs video processing? For my purposes, would there be any disadvantage to getting one of the new HDMI 1.3 receivers, such as one of the new Onkyo 500 series, that just passes through the 1080P signal from the XA2 DVD player? My big concern is being able to listen to HD-DVDs with TrueHD using the HDMI connection, which would seem to not be a problem since the XA2 also already decodes TrueHD.

I don't need more than two HDMI inputs for my setup. I also have a Mits 57831 1080P display and Klipsch reference series bookshelf speakers. Any advice on a new receiver is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Ron

I guess my question is why pay the additional $$ to get the video processing capabilities of the 605 when the 500 series have almost the same audio specs, they just don't have the video processing of the 605?

I would only buy the 605 if you wanted to have DTS-HD, other than that it isn't really better than anything else. So, unless the receiver you have now doesn't have HDMI 1.3 don't worry about getting the 605. If I were going to get a new "receiver" I'd just fork out the money for an amp/preamp combo.

You can hook up your speakers to the HD-DVD player??? I've never used one so I wouldn't know. If you can and don't mind the quality of the sound coming from your speakers then there wouldn't be a need to get a new receiver since your HD player can handle HDMI 1.3 sound. IF this is not the case, then I would consider getting a receiver with HDMI 1.3 Then again, I don't even know how different DTS-HD sounds from older DTS formats, so it might not even be worth the money.
