I got one of the refurb 5504's in the sweepstake promotion, and tried to set it up this morning. First i tried using the broadband connection, but it didn't work whether I let it get an address automatically from my Belkin router or I configured the address manually. I was able to ping the RTV from another computer, so its network interface was working. When it tried to connect to the ReplayTV service, it immediately reported "Unable to connect".

Then I tried configuring it to use the modem. Again, it immediately reported "Unable to connect", without even trying to dial. This is the same phone line that the Showstopper that it's going to replace is using with no problem, and I verified that there's dial tone.

I suspect I got a lemon and just need to call ReplayTV to get it replaced. Anyone have other ideas?

In short, if you connect to ethernet then change it can get confused.

To save on explaination, just do a factory reset with the ethernet cable disconnected (i assume you don't have any shows). Might as well check out your dialup connection first. After it comes back make sure you don't select an ethernet connection first.

you can do a factory reset by typing 382

Tell us what happened and we'll go from there

If dialup works then try ethernet. plug in the ethernet cable and wait 30 sec for good luck. Then change it to an ethernet connection in setup.

NOTE: You should probably hook the replaytv directly up to your cable modem after the it has been freshly booted. It's always good to start the diagnosis off on a good foot.

382 zones (press 382 and then "zones" button within 5 seconds) restore factory default is a great way to resolve network or modem switching difficulties. Unfortunately until the unit has successfully connected you're stuck in quick setup and can't access the 382 zones option (as far as I know).

Your best option is to disconnect the ethernet cable, turn off the front panel power button, wait 30 seconds and unplug the power cord for 1 minute. When you plug it back in, it will boot fresh and hopefully complete the modem connection.

Oh yeah. How silly of me. He's in setup.

Well he can test a old zones command for me. I'd like to know if typing 49152 will exit the quick setup wizard. It's an old zones number i'd like to know if still works.

barmar - I had similar problem with my recent 5504 refurb where DHCP settings wouldn't work for initial net connect for some reason. In my case after switching over to static IP settings and then forcing a reboot the net connect worked. After everything was settled (after download of latest 5.1 software) I switched back to (statically assigned by router) DHCP and things have worked fine since.

My plan was to temporarily disable DHCP on the router if things had continued not to work properly to get around the old RTV DHCP bug. So that's something you may consider too. Disable DHCP on the router, assign static IP settings, reboot the RTV (holding down power button) once you assigned static IP. Once things are working and latest 5.1 software is downloaded you can switch back to normal/desired config.

I haven't been able to get 49152 zones to work on a 5000. It does work with Showstoppers.

I just bought two 5504's and both had the same exact problem where they got my DHCP just fine, but said they couldn't connect to ReplayTV. I tried hitting 'back' a few times and trying again, but no luck. After a couple of times they wouldn't even get DHCP anymore and wanted me to enter all my network settings.

In both cases the problem was solved by pulling power for 30 seconds and then going back into the new setup wizard and this time they got DHCP and connected just fine.

Something about that initial connection.....

Yeah, there's something screwy with the software these 5504 refurbs are coming out of the box with that's not very DHCP-friendly. The key seems to be rebooting/power reset out of the setup process when stuck at the IP configuration.

Barmar-

When I first got my 5504, it had trouble connecting to the service. After unplugging the unit, and waiting 30 seconds, it was able to connect successfully. Try it again....and good luck.

OIC

hmm.. I'm taking the never surrender attitude by wondering if he typed 777-zones (or whatever it is) to turn on the demo mode, then typed 382-zones to delete the demo mode, if would it leave him in regular menus. I'm guestimating it would.

heh, he's probably fixed it by now, i know

I eventually made it through the initial setup by using the modem -- it took a couple of tries: first it couldn't dial at all, then it dialed and connected, but got stuck while downloading the information, and then finally it succeeded.

I've tried changing it to use Ethernet, but it still refuses to connect to the server that way. I tried going through my broadband router and also connecting it directly to the cable modem (and yes, I made it renew DHCP when I switched this). It successfully gets its configuration from the DHCP server, but still reports an error connecting to the server.

The modems in the ReplayTV's are rather sensitive to interferance from DSL signals on the phone line. Make sure you have a filter hooked up between the replay and the phone jack.

Power-cycling the unit seems to have finally done the trick. It was failing to connect by modem, but I just switched it to Ethernet and it connected on the first try.
