New sub makes loud hum and pops

1086 Views 4 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  Ed Mullen
I bought two brand new svs pb16ultra subs and they sound great. But i noticed one had a loud hum and when i wiggle the rca cable on the back of the sub it makes pop noises and makes the hum louder or goes away completely for awhile. But will come back and then i just have to wiggle the cable until i find the right spot and its gone again. Also if i wiggle the reciever side it does not make any noise.

The second sub does not do this at all, runs silent. I tried both cables on both subs and it changes nothing(one sub is good and other one does it with either cable)

What could be wrong with the sub? Wonder if it is something i could fix.

Sorry as i rushed reading your post. I suspect something on the inside of the subs RCA plate. Try gently squeezing the outer pins on the RCA cable so it makes a nice and tight fit when pressing it onto the sub female RCA connector so there is "no" play once connected see if that makes any difference. Also make sure there are no loose screws anywhere on the back of the plate amp especially near the RCA connectors, Otherwise Contact SVS.

Could be a cable problem. Swap the cables. Does the problem follow the cable or stay with the sub?

It's a cable problem, the ends are not fitting tight enough. I had the same problem when I went cheap and bought Monoprice sub cables. I sent them back and purchased Bluejeans cables and the problem was solved.
Try the known good RCA able (the one that doesn't hum with the other subwoofer) on both RCA inputs of the subwoofer amp. If one of them is intermittent/humming and the other is not (with the same known good cable) - then there is a problem with that RCA input. Contact SVS CS at [email protected] for further guidance on how to get a replacement amp.
