new sub system

1525 Views 34 Replies 12 Participants Last post by  HaroldKumar
I have a 20x15x8 room, tv and mains are setup on the long wall.
I am using a diy 15" sub now, and I've played around with my old Hsu, not really satisfied.
I think it's time for new system.
I can place sub(s) just about anywhere. 1-3 subs
Budget is 1000-2500, aiming for about 1500.
What's the latest thinking?

Movies? Music? Both? How loud do you want to listen in terms of reference level, i.e. -10 MV, -20 MV, 0, etc? How important are the low frequencies that you can feel more than hear, especially for movies, and how important is high SPL, lifelike mid bass with a lot of kick? IMO these questions will help us steer you towards good options.
OK, here's more info:
75% ht / 25 music
I watch sports on tv, and usually romantic movies lol and music all kinds
I listen to music at about 83 db, movies a little more
I don't watch much action movies, but I do like, in fact want, life like bass with kick!
2 Rythmic FVX-15's
83dB and you need more than a 15? How many seats are you looking to satisfy? How worried about seat-to-seat consistency are you? 15x20 isn't all THAT huge, so a 15 or two should be plenty. Just build a second one.

I second this!
These 15" are so huge, almost seems weird. I am intriqued by the new small ones. I like aesthetics of the small ones. what about 3 of the svs micros?
are these any good?
also just 3 seats, and Its usually just me

I don't have an SPL meter, but isn't that kinda LOUD? (85dB is the figure usually cited for hearing damage with long exposure.)
15" too large? That's pretty much entry level these days.

SVS Micro rolls off pretty early so not a lot of love here, where we tend to like full range subs. On this board, I doubt you would ever ever get a recommendation for a micro sub of any sort.

So 1 DIY 15" isnt enough and you want more, but you only want to spend 1500, 1500 for 3 subs? Its barely enough for 1. Better go back to DIY with that budget and expectation level.

Start with 4 micros ;) Your room is decent sized. Back to a single 15" not meeting your needs. Unless it was a real crummy design and speaker you are seeing the effect of the room size and your desired bass level. Dual 15's minimum.

I'm guessing most folks in this forum are listening louder than I do. I just looked at my phone app, maybe thats not accurate.
But I could be deaf forever.... :);) Its a rough crowd around here. I said 1-3 subs 1500 to 2500,
that could be one sub for 2500 or 3 subs for 1500.
Yeah its probably that I don't even need one, but that would not be much fun.
Well if you just want spend money on subs and get an upgrade:
Dual subs
2x Hsu VTF-15
2x Rythmik FVX15
2 x Hsu ULS-15 (if you think you want sealed) veneer finish available
2 x PSA S1512 (also sealed) veneer finish available

Single subs:
Rythmik FV18
PSA TV1812
PSA TV2112
PSA S2112 (see my signature)
PSA S3012 veneer finish available

Whether you need that much sub, only you can answer.

Do yourself a favor and get an Umik-1 and learn REW as that will help you with setup or can be informative with your current setup to figure out if there is a problem or perhaps help identify things you like vs dislike.

ok, lets forget about the micros. Blasphemy!
So now the question is :
Will 2 15" subs give you bass impact and slam that 1 15" sub won't? Or are we talking minimal impact?
What about two 12-13" subs vs one 15"?
room is 2400 cf
Start with 1 Rythmic FXV-15, if its not enough for you, get another one:cool:
When you say you listen at 83, do you mean an average level of 83dB using an SPL meter? Or, 83 on the AVR volume control, as I'm assuming you meant the latter, and you are using the Absolute scale on your AVR?? (most on here use the Relative scale, meaning you will see a negative number for your master volume)
I don't want to get into a db discussion. I use a mini-dsp without any avr filtering.

The level I listen at, you can have a conversation at same time, I'm thinking this is normal level.

Forget about it.

The sub I have now is actually pretty good, its Parts Express build, 15" ref driver and Yung 500W amp. in their 3 cf cabinet.

Now I'm just wondering if I can get more slam with another sub.

In short, is it worth it?

If you went with something like the PSA TV2112, yes. It would be a very noticable upgrade.
