This weekend I ran across what looked like a deal -- a Toshiba 36" HDTV, the 36HF12, for $1050 including tax (!). From what I have read this seems to be the "Costco" version of the 36HF72. The unit I got was a floor sample or open box return, but it came with a 30 day warranty from the retailer and more importantly, a complete Toshiba warranty -- so after checking this forum (and other sites) for info I took the plunge.

The picture is pretty nice and I am generally satisfied with the set -- but it definitely has a few problems that need to be taken care of. I was hoping that I could get some tips from other members before I go into the wild land of warranty service... this will be a drag, but I saved a bundle. :)

The first and worst problem is that the picture "bounces" at times. This can happen when you are walking next to the set, or at random. It really seems like something is loose in there! This happens with all the inputs I have tested, though the problem comes and goes. (temp related?) Everything else I might be able to take care of myself with the service menu, but I figure they'll have to crack the case to get this one fixed...

Next, the picture size is a bit off, stretched vertically. For example, the news ticker at the bottom of CNN is cut in half, and objects on the screen look just a touch stretched.

Lastly, there are some geometry problems -- straight horizontal/vertical lines bow in towards the center of the screen a bit.

Has anyone had experience with Toshiba warranty service?

Does anyone know where I can find a service manual for this TV? I found some references to www.keohi.com/keohihdtv/ but it seems to be down. :( I am hoping to fix the geometry problems with the service menu, but I need a guide...

Oh, the place has one more identical set for sale... if anyone in Seattle is interested, it is "Stupid Prices" in Kenmore. I believe they get a lot of returned/floor model stuff from the Seattle Costcos. Not the kind of place I generally buy electronics, but the price was right and the warranty was there...

Thanks in advance for any advice/links!

Update:

I managed to find some info on the service menu and I was able to partially correct the geometry problems. I have adjusted the picture height and image position, and this slightly improved the bowed lines problem too -- though it isn't completely fixed it's not too bad. I'd like to shoot for 100% though...

The pic (2k) shows the geometry problem more clearly. Anyone know which service setting will adjust this?

The horizontal bowing can not be fixed via the service menu. Call these guys for service.

Teletron Service Co.

They will pick up your set and fix any geometry issues. The only thing you will need is a proof of purchase (receipt)

I have the same horizontal issue and will have mine fixed when I am on vacation as the bowing is not too terribly pronounced.
