Just got a brand new VSX-1123 today and tried hooking it up via HDMI. The TV just flashes randomly and I can't see any of the receiver GUI screens at all. The TV tells me it's getting a 1080i input. I tried hooking up both a DirecTV HR-44 and a Panasonic Blu-Ray player through it (both at 1080i) and, although I'm able to get a picture from the DirecTV box, it blacks out every few seconds. The Blu-Ray player just gives a black screen. (The DirecTV and Blu-Ray both work fine hooked directly up to the TV, just not through the receiver - so it seems my TV HDMI port is okay and the cable is okay). Thinking this might be because my TV is so old (Mitsubishi WS-65413 - 10 years old), so maybe the receiver is doing something that doesn't work with it but the DirecTV and Blu-Ray players are not. I'm getting a new TV in a couple of weeks so don't know if I should try to return the receiver, or just wait for the new TV and see if everything is resolved there.

I'm not sure what receiver settings I can change to try things out - without being able to see the GUI anyway. It doesn't appear that the AVNavigator program will let me change settings that might affect this.

Assuming it isn't the receiver, deficient HDMI cables are the most common cause of intermittent problems like what you describe. Make sure the cables are certified High Speed. You don't have to buy overpriced "boutique" cables, though. Monoprice and Blue Jeans Cables are popular sources here.

that TV doesn't have an HDMI input does it? I was thinking they had DVI. If this is the case then its probably about a 95% chance it is the Mitsubishi causing the problems.

You are right - there is an HDMI-DVI adapter and I was plugging into that. I did find another newer TV and plugged into that and the receiver worked perfectly fine - so it is definitely the TV here. I was just thrown by the fact that the TV worked connected directly to the DirecTV set-top box and also the Blu-Ray player. But the receiver must be doing something that the TV can't handle.

Thanks!

That's strange. Using an adapter should not be a problem.
