New way to measure bass in your room with your iPhone(3G S only)!

So i was filming my SPL meter today to post on youtube my 120db hit with my Epik Knights and came across something kinda cool. While filming 40hz-42hz I moved my iPhone to different listening positions and noticed that the audio signal completely changes when I move to the other sofa and around the room. In theory you could just play a 40hz etc. test tone and move all around the room and the audio from the recording on your iPhone will tell you where dead spots and heavy spots are. Here is the video to give you an idea. Now of course this can be done with any microphone etc. but I thought it was useful. In the video you will here a pitch shift when I move right, all that is is 40hz moving up to 41hz.

interesting...

Why only the 3g "S"? I have a 3g and have seen the SPL apps for the standard 3g as well. Only think i remember is i think it has a 110-115db limit? Whats your SPL app called?

thanks!
My post was about Recording a video and hearing the different tones throughout the room. This can only be done on a 3G S or jailbroken iPhone.
If I were to take a wild-assed guess, which I figure I'm about to do, I would say that you are finding locations where a harmonic is starting to overpower the fundamental and the resulting complex sound has a higher pitch. That assumes your tone generator is stable.

On the other hand, it could be a doppler effect if it only rises as you move toward the source.
This place offers apps to do all kinds of measurements:

And it looks like they'll have an outboard version with mic cal too:

Nice find.

I've seen a couple of iphone apps that will take SPL readings. Pretty sure they work with all iphones. Never investigated them much as I'm not so certain the mic in the iphone would be all that accurate.

I don't know that taking a video would help me with set up. MIght be a cool, though.
The 3GS actually has horrible bass response on it's mic and or ADC. The 3G is better for subwoofer measurements.

Matt....do you use a specific program using the iphone to measure bass response? I've been trying to find one (although I doubt it would replace my trusty Rat Shack meter).
