NEWB Question

Thanks for all the wonderful knowledge I've been able to gain in this forum. Like most of you, I am constantly thriving to increase the quality of my displays. I currently own a new Panny 42PXHD and the 56 Sammy DLP. I subscribe to Direct-TV and have the Sony HD200 STB running to both sets. via DVI/HDMI. That being said, does it make sense to look at a scaler to help with the PQ from Direct-TV? It is killing me. I've read quite a bit about all the latest scalers and have not really read much about the PQ increase with Direct TV. Most everyone seems happy with the DVD PQ. My question is: DOes it makes sense to buy a $1500-$2000 scaler to make my PQ better from Direct TV or am I only really going to see a difference with DVD inputs? I know there is not much you can do with such a poor signal from Direct-TV, but I would like your opinions. If so, which scaler would you recommend? Thanks all.

Hmmm....I 'm not sure the money is worth it, but I will give you some additional thoughts...

I realize there's a BIG difference bewteen HD and non-HD content. I can clearly see the difference on my setup (D-ILA projector and 54" Samsun HD RPTV, with Samung SIR-TS160), component). I*do not* scale the input for either unit, relying on 1080i output for the HDTV and RGB passthru for the D-ILA. Yes, I do think the Samsung with regular DTV content looks pretty bad. I find it pretty annoying when I switch back and forth with the Samsung. Now, funny thing I noticed. I also have a D-Tivo setup with output on S-video through a scaler. On D-ILA (120" Stewart Greyhawk screen) the S-video scaled output was quite a bit better than the Samsung regular" DTV input. I am guess that some of this has to do with the scaling abilities between the Samsung and the scaler (FYI - I have a Quadscan Elite HD, RGBHV output). But I found this test interesting. I do plan some more tweaks in the near-future, such as upgrading the scaler. But I found this little bit interesting.

Good luck!

I have had both the Key Digital Digital and HD Leeza scalers which does a very good job scaling, but to be honest, SD from my Direct TV box still looked soft and I dont like watching it. The only scaler that might make ae difference may be a Faroudja scaler, but I not sure that the price tag will justify the improvement.
