Well, "building" might actually be an exaggeration...

I just bought a 32 inch TV and plan on unveiling it to the household as a birthday surprise this Friday. I note that the current TV stand is a tad too small, 31" wide and 20 inches "deep". The TV is 34 inches wide and 22 inches deep.

I'm trying to save $$$ and hope to avoid paying the nasty prices I have seen for TV stands. I also like the current one and it fits my DVD and audio equipment nicely.

So, I am thinking of simply buying a 2' x 4' board and attaching it to the top of the current one. The current stand is a black one, I have no clue what they actually make these things out of. I assume one cannot simply go out and buy a 2' x 4 piece that is already black? My alternative would be to buy a pine/plywood board and try to stain it black. I am not sure how "black" we can get with stain.

The TV is 114 pounds. I assume that my existing stand, with casters, will hold it without problems. I am guessing it was built for a 27" TV system and the usual other home theater hardware.
