Newbie flasher/repeater help

627 Views 6 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  Marcus111
I'm building a cabinet and I'm going to have 4 components inside it that I will need to control. There will be about 2 feet between where I would like to place the sensor and the cabinet. I'm a bit confused on the difference between IR Flashers and IR Repeaters, and which one would work the best.

I was thinking of getting the Hot Link Pro repeater based on someone else's suggestion, but then I read a flasher installed in the cabinet may work by bouncing the signal off of the inside of the doors (doesn't sound like the best solution to me though).

Is there any difference between repeaters or recommendations? Also, I have a plasma screen, and ran across this site . Is there some kindof special circumstances surrounding plasma screens where I would need a "plasma proof" repeater?

Thanks in advance for help.

O, boy..... where to begin?

A "flasher" is a term used to describe and item that attaches to the component being controlled. You need to find an item to recieve the signal from outside of the cabinet.

Standard IR repeaters use 3 pieces ..... Reciever + Brain + Flashers

Some times Plasmas can cause interference with the recieving "EYE" so "Plasma Proof sensors are available from SpeakerCraft, Niles, ect. Usually only needed with large plasmas 55" +.

The hot link pro is another good solution, I think one of the members here has them on there website for a good deal. They should not have a problem with plasmas.

Depending on the remote you plan on using ..... RF would be an option also.

I'll be using a Harmony 680.

Could someone PM the member who has good deals on the Hot Link Pro?

Sorry Mike...if Im not supposed to post that.
Hello,

I am also looking for something that will eliminate the remote control "sweet spot" in my living room. I recently purchased the Harmony 880 and was looking to get an RF extender, but they all seem to be big and bulky and the small compact battery ones will not work with the 880 because of the rechargeable batteries.

Anyway, I was looking to get an IR repeater or extender or whatever it is called. This is my situation. I will not be more than about 12 ft away from any of the components to be controlled and currently there is a sweet spot that only allows me to get about 15 degrees off axis from the center of the TV. I am going for practical and cheap in this endeavor because the sweet spot is not that big of a deal, but I would like to not have to deal with it at all.

If anybody has any suggestions I would be very happy to hear them. Thanks.
Hello runninkyle17:

Hot Link Pro's eye is 4 times as sensitive and is great at off angle response.

With LCD TV or plasmas the eye should be mounted behind the set where the IR noise will be mitigated and it will still see the remote off angle.

At your service,

Marcus, Microsmith Inc.
