Newbie Has A Windows MCE with HDTV Question

271 Views 4 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  umdivx
Hey guys! I was looking throught the site but couldnt find what I was looking for. I had a question about using HDTV with windows MCE PC. I was reading that with the new update windows MCE will support HDTC but only over the air HD ... which I am assuming that means no ESPN and Cable HD.

Now here is my question .... I currently have Direct TV with HD service, is there any way to run component cables from the Direct TV box in to something like the View Sonics NextVison N6 and run the media center from that? .....Kind of like how a TIVO works and runs the cable/sat box.. or would the software not work with that?

Do a search for firewire recording and you will find a way to hookup the box by firewire. There are also ways of using a serial connection to control the box, but there is no "easy" way to get premium HD on an MCE box right now. Cablecard support is supposed to be released in 2006.

The viewsonic won't really work how you want. It is basically a switch box and a set of inputs. You would get the same result from hooking up the HTPC to two different inputs on your tv and switching sources there. It's meant so you can use a computer monitor without turning the computer on, but as soon as the computer comes on it trumps all other inputs and you will only have that connection.
Oh ok ... thats makes sense.

Sucks that prem HD support really isnt there. I guess I could just go with the Driect TV DVR. Is it possible the record HD on the Direct TV DVR/Tivo and then send it over to the Media center?

Check the TIVO Community Forum. It may be possible but not legal. Lots of

hacking. The D* Tivo HD is a great tool. I don't have one and a PC still can't compete w/ it. Most users of MCE record SD only...

Currently MCE only support OTA HDTV tuners, and Currently there are no affordable ways of captureing Component / DVI /HDMI (any hi def sources), so basically NO QAM tuning and no HD caputuring is doable in MCE.
