Newbie help for 65" RPTV

381 Views 6 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  Marc Alexander
Hi all,

I have been browsing these forums for a while now and researching different models of RPTV.

I am soon moving into my new home and wanted to first accessorize it with the most essentials ... an RPTV. :)

I have the perfect space for a 65" and wanted to stick to Toshiba, Sony, Samsung or Mitsubishi.

DLP won't work for me because of height and $$ --> sorry arungupta :)

Any suggestions will be highly appreciated.

Thanks.

I'm doing research on this as well, tring to decide between the 65 inch Mitz and 60 inch Sony LCD and Samsung DLP. At Harvey's electronics (a high-end retailer in New York, New Jersey and Conn.), they don't recommend the Mitzs but as far as I can tell, that's just based just on its size. Having said that, the highest end Mitz they sell is the Select series, a cut above the Diamond Series. From what I gather from other postings on this site, if you have the room and don't mind the size, it's about as good as it gets. I realize this is far from a technical answer but it's what I've learned so far. I'll be looking for other responses to your question as a help to me as well. Good luck.
I think that the Diamond is the top of the line mits. Anyhow, I have a 65 mits and it is great. The only thing that I dont care for is the stretch modes. But DVD and HDTV are amazing. As for your other choices the Tosh. upconverts everything to 540p. Some people like the results, I thought it made the image soft. I also thought that the sony was soft. I never even bothered with Samsung. If you dont need an over the air antenna than I would go for a Mits 65413. Or if you could still find one you could save some cash and get a 65411.
I asked the Bestbuy salesperson to hook up the dvd player to the 65313 (thay didnt have the 413) and to my surprise, it was VERY grainy. The cables used were component.

Any idea? Could it be the format set?

Keep in mind that the sets at bestbuy are not adjusted for home use. Usually the sets at stores are set in torch mode. In other words the settings are WAY off where they should be. Bring a set up disk with you and ask the salesman to let you adjust the set. Then make sure that the DVD player is progressive scan. You may also want to bring your own disc. Some dvds are "grainy", that is not the sets fault. A good disk to audition sets with is Starship Troopers. I think that you will be surprised by the difference. BTW if the store will not let you adjust the set, then shop elsewhere! Your local SEARS will let you adjust the set and they will price match any deal that BB has. And dont fret the 413 313 thing both sets are killer!
Most of the times the DVD players are set to 4x3 mode as well...then the salesdrone has the TV set to non-anamorphic zoom mode to compensate.

Don't save your cash on the 411. The x13s have stretch+ and AMVP, which fixes Mits' past flaws with the line doubler and stretch modes.
