I want to hook up a set of wireless headphones to my new Sony STR-DA1ES A/V receiver so that I can listen to the sound on our home theater set-up while my wife enjoys quiet. I've been using an old JVC wireless headphone/receiver that has a mini-plug converted into RCA cables that I used to plug into our old TV's audio out connectors.

I can't figure out how to hook the headphone transmitter up now to the new receiver. I would like to continue to be able to use RCA connectors rather than convert to a phono plug that plugs into the phono jack on the front of the receiver, because that would be pretty unsightly to have the wires hanging out there in front all the time, but I don't know how to connect them in the back of the unit. Sony product support was completely useless, and the salesperson where I bought the receiver said I should be able to use the pre-out RCA connections, claiming those were the same as "audio out"s. Yet when I tried to hook my existing transmitter up to the pre-outs, all I got was a loud hum. So, my initial questions are:

1. Are the "pre-out" connections the same as "audio outs," and should they work for the wireless headphone transmitter?

2. If so, do I need to somehow turn the pre-outs "on" through some command to the receiver? (Again, the manual is useless here.)

3. The receiver has separate pre-outs for the two front speakers, two surrounds, and center speakers. I only have two RCA connectors (L/R). If I connect to the front speakers, will I be losing the dialog that is usually distributed over the center speaker?

Appreciate any help and advice you knowledgeable audiophiles can give me.

I would try either a zone-2 out, if you have it, or an unused tape (recording) output.

I have no zone 2 (I think that only starts to appear on the DA2ES and up), and the MD/Tape Out doesn't do it. Nor do the Video 1 or Video 2 outs, unless there is some programming function I am supposed to use to make them work.

Worse yet, if I break down and use the headphone jack in the front with an adaptor from the RCA cables, the speakers automatically shut off (this despite the presence of a speaker on/off button, which is apparently overridden by the jack), meaning that I can't leave the transmitter plugged into the receiver and just turn the headphones on and off from where I am seated (or in my case, lying down).

I just don't understand how there cannot be any audio out on this type of unit.

Fred, have you gotten the phones to work in any way? Maybe the problem is batteries, RF-channel setting, etc. Process of elimination; hear them work with another piece of equipment.
