from you description, I think you center channel speaker is the culprit. It may work fine by itself, but when other demands are put on the system, it goes into protection mode. A wild a## guess is that the impedance of the center channel is dropping too low while in use and straining the amplifier. It could be a defect in the speakers crossover circuit, or a defective voice coil. If you have another 8 ohm speaker "laying around" or can borrow one, try it as a replacement for the center channel and see if the receiver can manage the load. It still could be the wiring between the receiver and the center channel, but you need to eliminate the speaker as the fault first.

Also, have you tried unplugging a single (or 2 for that matter) different speaker? While the center might get the bulk of the signal, it'd be interesting to see... it could just as easily be a defective AVR... perhaps even its power supply...

Does the AVR seem warm when it shuts down? Does it get sufficient airflow?

at first i thought it was the receiver so i returned it and got a new one but same thing, and the receiver is well ventilated.i will check the wiring, but if the wiring was bad the center would not work.i need to borrow another speaker.i will try unhooking one off instead of the center and see what happens.any other ideas?thanks for the replies!
