Newbie question ~ Standard cable with new HDTV

We are going to be upgrading our family room TV soon, from an old CRT to a new LCD. We don't plan on upgrading from standard cable.

Does standard cable look ok on HDTV sets?

Standard cable still looks okay, but the low source resolution will be more apparent, especially if your new TV is much larger than your old one.
If the tv has a QAM tuner you will be able to get your local channels in high definition over cable. All other digital channels are probably scrambled.
Also looks better the further away you're sitting.
My standard cable looked much better on my CRT then the HDTV, but when I changed over to digital cable with an HD STB, the SD stations looked much better. I would say as good or even better then my sony CRT(as long as I keep the aspect ratio in 4:3).
I've found it depends on the channel. Some look good (although not HD good) and some are just watchable.

Nothing looks outright terrible. Also, some TV shows look better than others even on the same channel.

Make sure you get the QAM tuner so you can get local HD channels.
I find the higher number cable channels (not the local broadcast stations) look better as SD because I think the cable company is receiving those as digital signals. The lower number stations don't look as good. Remember: garbage in, garbage out.

If at all possible upgrade to HD cable. You spent good money on the LCD. HD looks so much better.
