Having just learned the hard way that S-video wont carry a progressive scan signal, I wanted to pass along a good resource I found to other noobs out there. It's a site for an Optoma projector, but it explains a lot of different general video concepts very simply: most of the various signals, cables, and some of the basic facts and math behind them. Also illustrates progressive and interlaced scanning and talks about video standards, scalers, etc. Click around in the side navigation and the next/previous links at the bottom.

And this one talks about all the different settings like tint, contrast, color temperature, etc. Very basic stuff if you're getting started. Just ignore the stuff that applies to projectors and you've got yourself a nice resource
