Hi Everyone,

I have never done a theater in my house before,so I need advice. I think all the A/V companies I have spoken with are full of it and was refered to this site. I heard you guys will have my answers .

The Room:

The room is on the upstairs of the house with only one window (which will be covered), so no light. It also has a prebuilt platform (see drawing below).

What I have:

-Seating (on order)

-Touch Screen Remote

What I need:

Everything else!!

I need your advice on Projectors, Screens (what size??), Audio, and everything else really necessary!!

The Budget:

$50,000. However the seating and remote are $20,000 so really its $30,000 remaining.

If you need anymore info to help, please post it and I will do my best to help out.

$30,000 is an acceptable budget. Stewart screens is sponsor to the forum. Get a wide-screen (16:9) and you can chose around a 100" size to what you like. You could look in InFocus as DLP projectors are nice. A CRT HDTV has the best picture. Generally spend half of your budget on the speakers. Speaker brands fall mostly to the subjective, personal preference, but with your budget you could look in Triad, Energy and maybe M&K. When you buy anything try to buy something that is flexible to upgradeable.

RMB 1050 400 MSRP

Speakers Main : B&W 703 3000. MSRP A pair

Center B&W HTM7 750. MSRP

Surrounds B&W DS7 750 ea. X 4 = 3000.msrp

Subs : SVS B4 with amp 3500 msrp

Total = 29500.00 +/-

This will give you a totaly kick ass system.

Thank you guys very much (esp. Jeff for the full breakdown). My inexperience is helped a lot by a breakdown like that!!!!!

A few questions:

1. What is Pre-pro (is it the reciever? If not what reciever?)

2. Any other options to consider besides B&W?? Haven't looked at them yet, but I like options incase for some reason I don't like them....

3.Wiring isn't included in this pricing right?? What are some good brands for that and how much can I expect to spend??

4.What are some companies that make some accustic panneling. Obviously the 50K budget doesn't allow for a total accusticly sound theater, but I think some pannels would help no??

4.5. Where would you guys suggest the panneling go??

5.This is all compatible with my new Crestron Wireless Touch Screen Remote correct??

6.What do you think about the B&K 507 for a reciever?? It was reccomended by a guy on my other forum...

Sorry for all the questions guys...ask me anything about a German car (Porsche specifically) and I have your answer, but put me in a theater and I don't know jack .

A pre-pro is an audio video PREamp PROcessor (decoder). Whereas a receiver is a AM/FM radio, amplifier, processor (decoder) and audio video switcher. A pre-pro would have outboard amplifiers connected to it and the receiver has it's own amp.

Anyway, just to be clear, you are looking to spend $30k for equipment, right? You aren't including anything for the room in there (acoustic treatments, carpet, paint, etc.) correct? Or, is the construction cost to be included?

bpape/David...-The seats are from Accustic Innovations down here in S. FL, I believe they were around 15K, while the Crestron remote was about 5K. The budget is 30K just for equiptment. The room is carpeted, platform is built, its painted. The only thing I would be interested in is some accustic panneling (don't think the budget allows me to do it throught the room, but would like some.

Hometheaterguy, I was my own designer. I took a few ideas from fellow members and added my own touch to them.


The list I gave in the breakdown are what I use in my theater and IMHO are the best for those price point. I think B&W make the best speakers around...ask anyone about the 800 series speakers(their top of the line stuff).

Some others that I like are Paradigm,Klipsch, DefTech. I would limit myself to those 4 and really only B&W.

Go to these links and print the info and tech sheets from the items, then compare them as you will. I guarantee you will not be disappoinited in these items.


My prices did not count for wiring and such. You can expect to pay 1-2k for all the wiring. Maybe less or maybe more depending on how much you want.


I heartily recommend Accoustic Research cables, and would caution you to stay away from Moster as they are overpriced.

Is the 8series a lot more than the 7?? Is it worth the upgrade?? If I need to blow the budget I will, but it needs to be worth it to me, and I need to stay somwhere close!!

Also...Seats, after measuring my room I am thinking the seats I have looked at (and was about to order) are going to be too long when extended... By looking at the demensions of the room in my drawing above, anyone have any seats they reccomend???

The 8 series are 12- 20k for a pair. The 7 is 3k a pair. The 800 speaker is the pinnacle of speakers.

If you haven't ordered the seats yet, I'd highly recommend looking at the Berklines. They are very popular here on this forum, and unless you are planning on buying a baker's dozen, I don't think they are going to set you back nearly as much as the other seats.
