Sat and ESPN HD: Still Waiting for a Deal

It's been a week since ESPN took the wraps off its

new high-definition network. And while ESPN has inked

agreements for delivery of ESPN HD with a number of

cable companies, the sports programmer hasn't yet won

carriage for the HDTV offering on satellite TV.

DirecTV spokesperson Robert Mercer said the satellite

TV company has held discussions with ESPN concerning

carriage of its HD feed, but the sides have not yet

reached an agreement.

Marc Lumpkin, spokesperson for EchoStar, said the

company's DISH Network hasn't recently added any new

HD channels "but we are always discussing new content

with our programming suppliers."

ESPN HD launched March 30 on cable systems operated by

Insight, Cox, the National Cable Television Cooperative,

Service Electric Cable TV, Utilacom and Comporium

Communications. Collectively, the operators serve

more than 22 million subscribers.

ESPN said on March 27 it would announce additional

agreements over the next several weeks.

Again, the news is no news. The words from D* and E* are the same as always, so at least we know THAT'S official!

And at least the ESPN announcement is less than a month old and so I have not gotten tired of hearing it...yet!

Thanks for the update. :)

Today's rumor: Expect news soon, real soon. And no, I can't say anything more.
Quick reminder - it's been 25 minutes since you said "real soon". Pretty soon it will cease to be real soon but rather just soon, which is not soon enough. :)
I predict I'll get married before ESPN-HD is on DirecTV...
Mark,

Any chance you're getting Married on Easter??

;)
Mark V.,

So you are in negotiations to get hitched?? Please be advised that marriage plans are expensive to produce... :D

Not always -- I got married in Las Vegas for $60 in a drive-through lane . Would have been $40 but we splurged and got a polaroid picture and a rose. We would much rather spend money on a home theater than a wedding, and we did!
Ken,

You are great at keeping the bait in front of our noses.
Ken ,

Please define YOUR definition of "real soon". In my book "soon" means within a week. "Real soon" means this week. Are you on the same page?

But, last week it was only "Expect news soon. And no, I can't say anything more." So, it was soon, now it's real soon. LOL Ken, you're killing us.
ken can you say if the rumor's are for directv or dish or both at least?

*clicks heels together and whispers....there's no place like CHARTER..

there's no place like CHARTER...there's no place like CHARTER *

I know you guys (It seems anyway) all are dish/directv nuts...but I

would be very excited to finally see ESPN-HD on my cable box and

my locals being added soon!

I'm with you. I have Comcast and it galls me that they haven't reached agreement with EPSN for HD. They are supposed to be getting HDNET, but are VERY closed-mouth about any new HD offerings.

I hadn't heard they were close with HDNET. That would be an unexpected surprise. I wasn't holding my breath for that one (or for any of them I guess) I would mostly appreciate Fox ED as it has the most programs I watch regularly in its higher resolution, widescreen format. Instead all I have is ABC, NBC and PBS.

Randy - Stuck with Comcast as dish's aren't allowed in my neighborhood.

Yes...I am in contact with a local manager here with Charter in Ft Worth,

and she advised they are coming with the locals soon...and that they are

in negotiations with ESPN-HD...I am very excited. We already have HBO/

SHO/HDNET/HDMOVIES/DISCOVERY. ESPN and my locals would top that off

like a cherry on a sundae.

This is worse than my wife taking a phone call from her mother last night as soon as I got my pants off. And no, I can't say anything more... Except that I plan to try again soon, real soon.
