Nintendo does not want to sell the GBA

Miyamoto feels that since the DS is driving the Japanese market there will be no successor to the GBA.

This is terrible news as the GBA is the best selling game system in history and outsells the DS outside of Japan. This seems to be Nintendo coming out and saying the Japanese market is what's important and not the rest of the world. Kinda sucks to be the rest of the world... I mean I'll be in line for a DS lite but I sure as heck would have been in line for a new GBA as well.

That's not what Nintendo is saying at all. What they're saying is that there's no reason to sell a new Gameboy at this time with the massive success of the DS. The DS Lite can't even remain in stock over in Japan and isn't even out yet here in the US/Canada. Why start talking about or release a system that could steal the DS's thunder and possibly kill its momentum.

Nintendo simply wants to ride the DS wave for a little while before announcing a new handheld.
The DS and the GBA seem to coexist quite well. While neither sells as well as the PSP outside of Japan combined they outsell it by quite a margin.

Having owned a DS and owning 3 different versions of the GBA (White, Black with afterburner and SP) There are games that are better suited to the single screen.

Many GBA owners have been waiting for the promised (google news around the DS release where Miyamoto assured gamers the DS was not being replaced a new one would be worked on) GBA update. Certainly you remember the "third pillar".

I totally agree. People are so high on Nintendo on the chance they took with the DS calling them geniuses, when the truth is, they weren't sure how well the DS would be received and were planning the successor to the GBA all along just in case.

As luck would have it, Nintendo has a hit on their hands, especially with the new redesigned DS-Lite. This thing is a cash cow for them, and there is no reason as this time for them to release another handheld. My guess is that we won't see a GameBoy successor for awhile.

^ I agree. The DS lite is a huge phenomenon over in Japan, and I predict great sales over this side. Why put out another handheld to slow momentum of the DS?

The DS outsells the psp by a wide margin...Outside of the ps2 the DS is the best selling video game machine.
