I'm wondering is it true that only the retail version of PowerDVD could output 5.1+ channels?? reason is I'm using the free version of PowerDVD that came with the LG bluray drive. no matter what do I set (SPDIF, 6 speakers, etc.) I'm only getting 2 channels from DVD playback?? so I'm wondering do I have to hit that upgrade button in order to get 5.1 surround sound??

I haven't tried it with DVDs but with Blu-Rays and HD-DVDs you will only get 2 channel sound. It is just a demo/trial version to get people to buy their product. You may want to try out other players too before putting out any money.

I have the PowerDVD 7 from the LG bundle and I don't recall it not playing 5.1 for my HD DVDs. I still use it for HD since PowerDVD9 doesn't support HD. I'll have to test this when I get home. My receiver is hidden in a closest and I don't have many HD DVDs so it's possible I missed it.

Grab the 4407 Patch from Cyberlink's website and apply it. You'll get 6-channel dolby codecs, but dts codecs will stay 2-channel. The PowerDVD HD DVD and Bluray thread may have some other options somewhere in the thread.
