I posted this in the P5N7A-VM thread but maybe someone who doesn't read that will have an answer.

Using the following, the above MB, Sony HT-SS2300, Win XP MCE 2005.

I get no sound (and the receiver indicates nothing) when playing MP3 files, wav files and wma files (possibly more those are just the ones I tried. However, if I open an AVI file I get sound (stereo only). If I pause that AVI file I can then play the other file types and get sound. For one boot only I was able to get 5.1, tested with a 6 channel wav file (its a voice stating speakers that played properly through my 5.1 system), however after reboot it went back to stereo.

The same goes for flash audio, for instance Hulu videos. If I simply open hulu I get no sound, unless I open an AVI file on at the same time.

I have the most recent NVIDIA drivers, HDMI audio drivers, and have tried the AC3 filter and FFDSHOW filters to no avail. The FFDSHOW tray icon only appears during the AVI playback, but not the wav or wma playback (even after changing settings in FFDSHOW audio to decode those file types).

I also have the following issues, but the above is the most important right now:

In TMT on some blu rays I can select SPDIF and get the proper downmix of TrueHD to DTS, on others selecting SPDIF causes all sound to be off, I have to select 5.1 to get the sound back.

There is a dropout of sound via HDMI, I have seen other threads on this but no answers. The sound seems to kick in a second or so after the computer transmits it, so I only get the tail end of system sounds if they are long enough, the shortest system sounds don't play at all. Again, unless I have an AVI file open, then all sounds work as normal.

I am thinking one solution would be to somehow send a constant audio signal through the HDMI cable, even if it is silent, just to trick the receiver into thinking sound is playing.

EDIT

The setting in the control panel for Speaker set up is 5.1 surround.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Well I figured out that if I leave the TV off until the computer is fully booted, I get the full surround sound I should. I still have to start an AVI file to get other sound files to play, but at least they are all in surround.

This is all going to a Hitachi TV (should be HDCP compliant), and I have AnyDVD HD running, so that should handle that if it isn't.

Is this an EDID issue? I read in that thread that only applies to Vista, is that correct? I am on XP.

Shameless bump again.

I think everything is pretty much working (streaming properly) except the WAV files and Flash video, still no sound unless an AVI file is playing (paused) in the background
