Well anything in CEDIA that should promise in the 10K to 17K price range for next year?

I have read of some good improvments in the 4K to 5K range, but thats about it.

Mattias, you think Sony is going to drop the price on their 1080 Qualia to below $20K? I cannot see that happening when some knucklehead is trying to sell a 1080P LCD for $25K.

Maybe other LCOS products but I expect sxrd/dynamic iris in that price lane at CES 2006.

If they wait until 2006 then I fear someone in another technology camp (1080P D5 with dynamic iris) may steal their thunder except for those that have more money than thrift in their nature.

I will still say 1080p sxrd with auto iris at that price.

For the Qualia projector they can add Eclipse and increase the price

Scenarei CES 2005

1 1080p auto-iris sxrd, 250W NSH or similar lamp type, probably 15k$

They trade price for quality on all optical components vs higher end products

2 Qualia 004 R2 as today but with Eclipse or some other type of rich mans auto-iris+ solution , still the big xenon bulb price below 50k$

They Qualia is their boutique high end "image" brand. The 04 has achieved its mission as arguably one of the best fp images on the planet!

Step 2 "mainstream" high end. That is the $8k to $15k SXRD pj to be announced at CES 2005 and ship Q2 or Q3 of '05. Look for the guts to be similar to the announced 70" SXRD RPTV, ie 200W lamp.

Sony's CES line up based on their past market segment strategy IMO

$ 3,500 HS51 720p LCD dynamic iris (CEDIA PR)

$ 7,000 70" XBR LCD RPT based on HS51 engine

$ 9,995 VPH 100 1080p SXRD dynamic iris

$ 9,995 KPS 70XBR100 1080pSXRD RPTV (CEDIA PR)

Mattias and Hoya both suggest an SXRD in the range of $8K-$15K and I agree we'll see such a thing. A variable iris would be a particularly good addition for it.

I thought I read somewhere (probably here) that the Qualia 006 SXRD RPTV had a dynamic iris. If true, one would expect the upcoming FPTV to have it, especially considering the budget HS51 has a dynamic iris.

I also recall a linked magazine review of the Sony store in NY which mentioned the Qualia SXRD RPT. I have not found any Sony announcements/info on such a beast.

Sony has announced the KFS 70XBR100, a 70" SXRD RPTV with a msrp "under $10k"

Yes, just under $10K ($9995 if I recall correctly).

I don't believe that's correct.

I'll be the doubting Thomas. I doubt there will be much at CES. Usually this show is more spill over from Cedia, either the same products or in some instances, new products that just didn't make it to Cedia for whatever reason. Of course I would love to be proven wrong....

We might see some newer DLP since there were supposed to be some at Cedia that didn't make it. But I don't know.

I'd suspect Sony will ultimately have around several SXRD-based products in the line (2-3 projectors, 5-8 RPTVs) and I doubt you'll see them only introduced at CEDIA in the future.

Whether that changes things for CES 2005, I dunno.

Also, things are moving fairly rapidly in the business and the competition is tougher than ever. Will we see a breakout at CES? Maybe, maybe not. But ruling it out seems premature.

We should see 1080P LCD projectors based on Epson's upcoming D5 1920x1080 LCD panels by next fall at prices that should be significantly less than 10K. Hell these could be less than 5K given the price of current 720P LCD projectors, the latest generation of which look pretty good.

I expect 1080p lcd to be priced closer to 10k$ than 5k$.

Mattias,

The first generation of D5 based 1080P projectors may be priced at around 10K which would be a breakthrough price for that resolution, however, a manufacturer could probably modify an existing 720P projector format and sell it at a profit for 5K. This would really shake things up.
